COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Before leading the USA Basketball Men's National Team to Rio de Janeiro in a quest for a third consecutive Olympic gold medal, USA and Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski will guide the team through the 2016 USA Basketball Showcase from July 18-August 1.
During the USA Basketball Showcase, the will play five domestic exhibition games and conduct training camps in Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Oakland, Chicago and Houston. Tickets for the exhibition games go on sale on April 29, and VIP packages will be available in select markets. Additional ticket information can be found at usab.com/showcase.
The USA Basketball Men's National Team will open the 2016 USA Basketball Showcase on Friday, July 22, when it faces South American rival and fourth-ranked FIBA power Argentina in Las Vegas. The site of the game has yet to be determined.
The U.S. will play two exhibition games against 2015 FIBA Asia zone champion China, the first at Staples Center in Los Angeles on July 24 and the second at Oracle Arena in Oakland on July 26. Continuing its exhibition tour in Chicago, the USA will play 2015 FIBA Americas gold medalist Venezuela at the United Center on July 29.
The USA Basketball Showcase will conclude at the Toyota Center in Houston on Aug. 1 when the U.S. faces 2015 FIBA Africa zone champion Nigeria.
“Building our team chemistry quickly is vital, and the 2016 USA Basketball Showcase will offer our players and coaches the opportunity to become familiar with each other, to develop chemistry and to gain critical international experience against a variety of differing styles,” Krzyzewski said. “We'll face some excellent and experienced international teams, which will be important in our preparations. Playing five exhibition games in the United States in front of home crowds will be memorable for our players and fans alike, and we look forward to representing the United States in the best manner we can.”
The 2016 Olympic Games men's basketball competition will feature national teams from 12 countries competing from Aug. 6-21 in Rio de Janeiro.
Former Duke star Kyrie Irving is among the 31 finalists for the 2016 U.S. Men's Olympic Team.
Irving was named MVP of the 2014 FIBA World Cup for his role in leading the U.S. to a 9-0 record and the gold medal. He started all nine games, averaging 12.1 points, 2.6 rebounds, a team-leading 3.6 assists and 1.9 steals. For the tournament, he shot 56.3 percent from the field, 60.9 percent from beyond the arc and 83.3 percent from the free throw line.
The West Orange, N.J., native also owns a gold medal from the 2010 USA U18 National Team that plowed through the 2010 FIBA Americas U18 Championship with a 5-0 record. In 20 total games for USA Basketball, Irving has averages of 12.9 points, 3.2 rebounds and 4.1 assists while shooting 56.1 percent from the floor, 51.1 percent from three-point territory and 87.2 percent from the line.
