DURHAM, N.C.—Four members of the Duke University wrestling team were voted to the 2016 All-ACC Academic Team as announced Tuesday by Commissioner John Swofford. Trey Adamson, Connor Bass, Jake Faust and Conner Hartmann all have garnered this recognition multiple times in their careers.
Hartmann picked up his third consecutive All-ACC Academic team honor, while Adamson, Bass and Faust each were voted to the squad for a second time in their careers. Virginia led the way with five honorees, while Duke and Virginia Tech both landed four on the 18-man list.
Hartmann, a three-time All-American at 197 pounds, was one of six All-Americans and one of just three ACC Champions to earn the honor. Faust is a repeat recipient, while Bass previously was recognized in 2014 and Adamson in 2013.
Duke's most decorated wrestler in program history, Hartmann departs as the lone three-time All-American in wrestling history as well as the lone Blue Devil to qualify for the NCAA Championships in each of his four seasons. He is a two-time ACC Champion and ranks fourth all-time in wins with 98. His .765 win percentage is ninth in Duke history and he became just the 13th wrestler in program history to record 30 wins in a season. In the classroom, he has excelled as well as a three-time All-ACC Academic team choice and three-time NWCA All-Academic selection. Hartmann will graduate in May with a degree in economics.
Adamson, a four-year starter for the Blue Devils, moved up to 184 pounds for the Blue Devils this past season. He finished the year with a 14-16 record and ranked tied for second on the team in falls with five. He took fifth at the Hokie Open to start the season and completed his career with a 68-56 overall record and six top-five tournament finishes. An evolutionary anthropology major, Adamson will graduate in May.
Duke's starter at 157 pounds, Bass posted a 17-14 record and 2-3 mark against ACC foes this season. He captured the Hokie Open title to kick off the year and added a sixth-place finish at the Wolfpack Open. An economics major, Bass was instrumental in Duke's upset victory over North Carolina as he pinned his opponent in the final seconds to give the Blue Devils six points.
Faust, an NCAA qualifier at 165 pounds, posted a 19-10 overall record for the Blue Devils. He was ranked among the top 20 for much of the season and went 5-2 overall against ranked opponents on the year. Faust won the Hokie Open, upsetting Stanford's Jim Wilson in the final, and also posted a crucial win over No. 9 John Michael Staudenmayer of North Carolina to help the Blue Devils upset the Tar Heels. A sociology major, Faust is 50-26 for his career.
The Blue Devils finished the year 6-9 overall, took fifth at the ACC Championships and 31st at the NCAA Championships. Duke also defeated a pair of ranked teams for the first time in program history this season.
