DURHAM, N.C. – Duke University sophomore women's golfer
Leona Maguire was selected Thursday to represent Great Britain and Ireland (GB&I) on the 2016 Curtis Cup Team. It will mark the fourth consecutive appearance on the GB&I Curtis Cup squad for the decorated golfer.
The 2016 Curtis Cup will take place June 10-12 at the Dun Laoghaire Golf Club in Ireland, which is only two hours away from Maguire's home.
Representing the GB&I squad will be Maguire, Maria Dunne, Alice Hewson, Bronte Law, Meghan MacLaren, Olivia Mehaffey, Rochelle Morris and Charlotte Thomas. Elaine Farquharson Black is slated to be the captain for GB&I.
Maguire, who hails from Cavan, Ireland, is currently the No. 1 ranked amateur golfer in the world and was an automatic selection due to her ranking. It marks the fourth straight year Maguire has been named to the team, but she did not compete in 2014 due to school conflicts.
The 2014-15 WGCA, Golfweek and ANNIKA award winner as National Player of the Year, Maguire has made a splash in college golf since her arrival in the fall of 2014. She owns four victories, 14 top 10 finishes and 13 rounds in the 60s. Maguire is currently ranked No. 8 in the latest Golfweek Individual rankings heading into NCAA regionals next week.
Over the summer of 2015, Maguire nearly won the ISPS Handa Ladies European Masters placing second overall and one shot back of the winner. She also competed in the Ladies' British Open Amateur, represented Ireland at the European Ladies Team Championship and competed in the Vagliano Trophy event for GB&I.
Out of the last four appearances in the Curtis Cup, GB&I is 1-3 with the lone victory coming in 2012 by a 10 ½ to 9 ½ ledger at The Nairn Golf Club in Scotland.
At least one current Blue Devil golfer has represented their country at the Curtis Cup competition in 10 out of the last 12 events dating back to 1992. The last time it was staged in Ireland was in 1996 with GB&I totaling an 11 ½ to 6 ½ victory at the Killeen Course in Killarney.
Other Blue Devils that have competed in the Curtis Cup while on the Duke team include Lindy Duncan (2012), Jennie Lee (2008, 2006), Amanda Blumenherst (2008, 2006), Brittany Lang (2004), Liz Janangelo (2004), Leigh Ann Hardin (2002), Beth Bauer (2000, 1998), Jenny Chuasiriporn (1998), Sarah LeBrun Ingram (1996, 1994, 1992), Stephanie Sparks (1994) and Mary Anne Widman (1984).
