DURHAM, N.C. – When senior swimmer Kiera Molloy underwent major surgery to have her pancreas removed last May, doctors put her recovery time at six months, assuming she would be able to swim competitively again.
Instead, Molloy was back in the water within six weeks.
That kind of determination was not altogether unexpected by her teammates, coaches and family. Molloy had been battling pancreatitis since childhood, her pancreas unable to produce the enzymes it needed to properly digest food. As a result, the Raleigh, N.C., native was a frequent visitor to the Duke Hospital to receive temporary pain relief from a condition that was irrevocably inflicting damage to her pancreas.
Molloy, a captain for the Duke squad this season, sat down with Blue Devil Network to reflect on her experience with pancreatitis and the support she received from the Duke swimming and diving program and Duke head football coach David Cutcliffe during her journey back to the pool.
