TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Returning to Florida State's Mike Long Track for the second day of the ACC Outdoor Championships Saturday, the Duke track & field program registered three All-ACC performances and advanced four runners to tomorrow's finals, bringing its total of qualified student-athletes for Sunday's finals up to nine.
In the team title chase, the Duke women currently rank fifth with 25 points, trailing only Florida State (58), Virginia (36), Louisville (31) and Virginia Tech (29.1). In the men's standings, the Blue Devils have totaled 7.5 points to sit in 11th, while Virginia Tech (64), Virginia (43), Louisville (37.5), NC State (37) and Miami (32) make up the top five.
In the lone finals on the track Saturday, the Blue Devils placed a runner in the top five of both the men's and women's 3,000-meter steeplechase. Graduate student Shaun Thompson, scheduled to split his talents between the steeplechase and tomorrow's 5,000, clocked an 8:43.64 to finish fourth and claim second team All-ACC status. The performance for Thompson was the second-fastest time in Duke history, roughly five seconds off of the school record. Racing on the women's side, senior Olivia Anderson also secured second team All-ACC accolades with a fifth-place finish. The native of Greenwood Village, Colo., completed the steeplechase in 10:29.18 to secure four points for the Duke women.
Finishing up the heptathlon Saturday with the final three events, redshirt senior Teddi Maslowski claimed second team All-ACC honors with a fourth-place finish, totaling 5,537 points. Entering the day with a score of 3,311 to rank fourth, Maslowski moved up to second momentarily with the top mark in the long jump, registering a wind-aided leap of 19-4.25 (5.90m) for 819 points. The Burgettstown, Pa., product then picked up 531 points in the javelin with a throw of 107-9 (32.84m) before ending the competition with a season-best time of 2:16.17 in the 800 to garner 876 points. Freshman Jaida Lemmons placed 13th overall with 4,254 points, but was in eighth heading into the final event before disqualifying in the 800.
In the decathlon, junior Chaz Hawkins moved up two places over the final five events to finish 11th overall with 6,102 points. Hawkins highlighted his day-two performance by recording personal bests in both the discus and 1,500-meter run, launching the discus 117-9 (35.91m) and clocking a 4:38.69 in the 1,500.
In the preliminary races, the Blue Devils advanced two sprinters to tomorrow's final in the women's 400 as sophomore Maddy Price and junior Madeline Kopp each grabbed at-large spots. Price ran a prelim time of 53.51, the second-fastest performance in Duke history, to rank fifth among the field, and Kopp clocked a 54.29 to rank eighth, edging out Notre Dame's Parker English in ninth by 0.01 second. The 400 will be one of two finals Price races in tomorrow after qualifying in the 200 Friday. In the men's 400, sophomore Brett Bofinger logged a season-best time of 48.19 to finish 15th in the prelims.
Following the 400, Duke qualified runners in both the men's and women's 800 races. Senior Anima Banks, who was one of three Blue Devils to advance to the women's 1,500 final yesterday, encored with the top preliminary time in the women's 800, stopping the clock at 2:05.14. Freshman Kim Hallowes nearly joined Banks in Sunday's final, placing 10th overall with a time of 2:09.34.
In the men's race, two Blue Devils logged sub-1:50 times, one of whom advanced to finals. Junior Dylan Murphy claimed the final at-large spot after clocking a 1:49.18, the fourth-fastest performance in school history, while redshirt junior Michal Filipczak finished 11th overall with a personal-best time of 1:49.67.
In the field events, the Blue Devils picked up two points in the women's throwing events as junior Christine Streisel and redshirt junior Urina Harrell placed eighth in their respective competitions. Streisel kicked off the day in the women's javelin by taking eighth with a distance of 132-10 (40.50m), then Harrell, competing in the women's shot put, scored her point with a heave of 48-6.25 (14.79m). Throwing alongside Harrell, junior Amarie Bremel placed 12th with a personal-best mark of 44-1.50 (13.45m), the fifth-best throw in school history.
The Duke men added a pair of eighth-place performances in the field events, as well. In the men's shot put, redshirt senior Stephen Boals launched the implement 57-2.00 (17.42m) to place eighth, while sophomore Colt Sessions tied for eighth in the men's high jump with a height of 6-9.75 (2.08m) to garner half a point for the Blue Devils. Teammates Rivers Ridout and Carl Heinz each cleared 6-8.75 (2.05m), a collegiate outdoor best for Ridout, to finish just behind Sessions in 10th and 11th, respectively.
The Blue Devils will conclude the ACC Outdoor Championships with the final day of competition Sunday, beginning at 11 a.m. with field events. ESPN3 is again scheduled to start a live broadcast at 6 p.m. that will run through the conclusion of the meet.
