TULSA, Okla. – Duke sophomore Nicolas Alvarez had his NCAA Singles Championship run come to an end Wednesday with a 6-2, 6-3 setback to Stanford's Tom Fawcett at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
“First rounds are often tricky and Nico ran into a very tough opponent today,” head coach Ramsey Smith said. “Fawcett played some great tennis from start to finish and he is an aggressive player with a huge serve. Nico hung in there and was close to turning things around, especially in the second set, but just didn't convert on some of the big points.”
Alvarez, who was an unseeded player for the draw and ranked 22nd in the latest Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association national rankings, dropped six of the first eight games with Fawcett taking the first set and going up 2-0 in the second. Alvarez bounced back with a pair of wins to even the second set at 2-2. From there, it was Fawcett with the answer, taking the next three and leading 5-2. Alvarez held serve to cut the deficit to 5-3, but Fawcett served out for the victory.
“Despite this loss, Nico has made some jumps in his game during the tail end of this season,” Smith added. “ He has set himself up to have a great summer on the courts.”
Alvarez ends the campaign with a 17-15 overall record and 10-13 mark against nationally ranked opponents.
