DURHAM, N.C.—The Duke senior midfield duo of Myles Jones and Deemer Class headlined the All-America list for the Blue Devils, earning first team honors from the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association. Justin Guterding and Kyle Rowe also earned recognition, garnering honorable mention accolades.
Jones earned his second consecutive first-team All-American nod, while Class returns to the top squad after earning the honor in 2014. It is the third All-America honor in each of their careers, making them the 12th and 13th Blue Devils to do so.
The 2016 ACC Offensive Player of the Year and two-time Tewaaraton Award finalist, Jones will go down in history as arguably the best midfielder to wear a Duke uniform and one of the best to play Division I lacrosse. In 2016, Jones finished second on the team in scoring with 70 points from 33 goals and 37 assists. His 37 assists are tied for seventh in Duke single-season history and matched his personal-best and midfield record set last season.
In his 18 starts this season, Jones scored five-plus points five times, registered three hat tricks and put together five performances with at least three assists. The Huntington, N.Y., tallied 11 points (5g, 6a) in the loss to North Carolina to tie the single-game record for points.
Jones, the 2015 L.T. j.g. Donald MacLaughlin Award winner as the nation's top midfielder, made history in 2016, becoming the first midfielder in NCAA Division I lacrosse history to record 100 goals and 100 assists in his career. He currently holds the Duke single-season and career records for a midfielder in points and assists and ranks second in goals.
Overall, his 231 points rank seventh in Duke history, while his 105 assists are fifth and 126 goals are 12th. Jones ranks seventh on the single-season list in assists (37) and 11th in points (77). One of 11 Blue Devils all-time to earn All-ACC honors three times in his career, Jones' 231 points are the second most among midfielders in NCAA history, behind Gary Gait's 253. He is one of five midfielders to reach the 200-point benchmark and currently ranks second among all players in career points. The 40 goals he scored in 2015 are 22nd among midfielders in NCAA history.
Class's on-field accomplishments are equally impressive. He led all Duke goal scorers with a career-high and Duke midfield record 50 goals. The previous Duke record for single-season goals by a midfielder was 40, held by Jones and Robert Rotanz.
He led all midfielders nationally in goals as he became just the sixth midfielder in NCAA Division I history and just the ninth Blue Devil overall to reach the 50-goal mark in a single season. Overall, he is just the third Duke midfielder to reach 40 goals in a season.
Also one of 11 Duke players to be a three-time All-ACC choice, Class had nine hat tricks and four five-plus point games, including a seven-goal performance in Duke's overtime win over Syracuse. He finished his career ranked ninth in career goals (134) and 12th in career points (201) at Duke. His 201 points are fifth among all NCAA Division I midfielders and he is one of six to reach the 200-point benchmark.
Guterding, Duke's top scorer with 71 points, made history in his sophomore season. The All-ACC selection became the fastest Blue Devil to 100 career points, reaching the benchmark in just 25 games – two games faster than current assistant coach Matt Danowski. With 71 points this season, Guterding also is the first Duke player to register 70 points in each of his first two seasons. His 71 points are 14th in Duke single-season history.
In 2016, the Garden City, N.Y., native compiled six games with five-plus points and had nine hat tricks overall. After dishing out just 18 assists as a rookie, Guterding handed out 28 this year and had five games with at least three. For his career, he ranks 30th at Duke in career points with 141 (95g, 46a) and is just 11 points shy of moving into the top 25. He is second among all sophomores nationally scoring and currently ranks 36th in active scoring after just two seasons.
Duke's faceoff specialist, Rowe was one of the top faceoff men nationally, finishing the year with 244 wins at the X, a .639 win percentage and 153 ground balls. He led the ACC in faceoff win percentage and ground balls and joined elite company as he joined Brendan Fowler as the only other Blue Devil to reach 600 career faceoff wins.
A winner of at least 10 faceoffs in 14 of his 16 outings, his 153 ground balls are third in Duke single-season history and tied for 14th in Division I history. The 244 faceoff victories are second in the Blue Devils' records book and tied for 20th all-time nationally. Rowe pushed his career faceoff wins over 600 in the final game of the year, winning a career-high 23 faceoffs and picking up a career-best 17 ground balls.
Overall for his career, Rowe is second among active players with 605 faceoff wins, 18 shy of moving into the top25 in the NCAA records book. His 376 ground balls is tied for second at Duke with CJ Costabile, tops among active players and tied for 19th all-time in NCAA history.
The Blue Devils finished the year 11-8 overall and fell to Loyola in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
