DURHAM, N.C. -- The 14th-ranked Duke women's tennis team concluded the season with three singles players and two doubles teams appearing among those ranked by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), as announced by the organization Wednesday. Duke never saw fewer than three members of the team ranked in singles throughout the year, while no fewer than two doubles teams ranked among the top 70 throughout a majority of the year.
Recent graduate Beatrice Capra highlighted the Duke contingent of ranked singles players throughout the season, concluding the year ranked No. 46. Capra served as the Blue Devils' primary competitor on court one in singles, posting a 5-5 record at the No. 1 position. Overall, Capra compiled a 9-6 mark, with four of those victories coming against nationally ranked competition. The Ellicott City, Md., native reached as high as 24th in this year's ITA singles rankings. Capra secured a spot in this year's NCAA Singles Championship, as well as the NCAA Doubles Championship. She garnered first team All-ACC honors, marking the fourth such recognition of her career. Capra capped her senior season by earning ITA Carolina Region Senior Player of the Year accolades.
Joining Capra on the final ITA singles poll is rising sophomore Kaitlyn McCarthy, who appears at No. 52. The All-ACC second team honoree provided an immediate impact for Duke's 2016 squad, registering the most singles wins (25) of any Blue Devil this year. McCarthy amassed an overall ledger of 25-13, with seven victories coming against top-125 opponents. The Cary, N.C., native split time between courts one, two and three, with eight wins coming at the No. 2 position. McCarthy played into the second round of the NCAA Singles Championship, defeating 64th-ranked Kimmy Guerin of Wake Forest in three sets during first-round action.
Rising senior Chalena Scholl rounded out Duke's representation on the ITA's singles poll, appearing at No. 59. A second team All-ACC recipient, Scholl recorded a career year that included a 22-10 singles record and a 7-6 mark against ranked competition. Scholl posted impressive play on court one during the second half of the season, registering a 7-2 record.
In doubles, Capra played alongside rising sophomore Ellyse Hamlin, compiling a 16-9 record, including 4-2 against nationally ranked opponents, to earn the ITA's 21st doubles ranking. All 13 of the team's dual matches came at the No. 1 position, where the duo posted a 7-6 record. The duo qualified for the NCAA Doubles Championship.
McCarthy and rising junior Samantha Harris paired to garner the No. 50 ranking in the final national poll. The duo combined to amass an overall record of 18-5. The team's 18 victories were the most by any Duke doubles pair during the 2015-16 campaign. McCarthy and Harris saw action on courts one and two and concluded the season with an 8-2 record over their final 10 completed matches.
As a team, the Blue Devils finished the season with an overall record of 19-7 and an ACC mark of 11-3. Duke placed third in the conference during the regular season and qualified for the NCAA Team Championships for the 28th time in program history.
