Maguire, GB&I Take Commanding Lead at Curtis Cup

ENNISKERRY, Ireland – After a very impressive display of golf on Saturday at the 2016 Curtis Cup, Great Britain & Ireland (GB&I) are on the verge of claiming the title at Dun Laoghaire Golf Club in Ireland. Blue Devil standout Leona Maguire went 1-1 on the day to help GB&I to an 8-4 advantage with singles action remaining.
GB&I need only two points from the eight singles matches Sunday to claim the Curtis Cup.
In the morning, Maguire teamed with Charlotte Thomas in the foursomes and went up against Bethany Wu and World No. 1 ranked Hannah O'Sullivan in what turned out to be a very tight match. Maguire and Thomas won the first hole with a birdie and held the 1up score through three holes. A birdie by the U.S. on hole four got the match to all square and another birdie on hole six gave Wu/O'Sullivan a 1up advantage. Maguire/Thomas came right back with birdies of their own at No. 7 and No. 9 to take a 1up lead through nine holes.
A bogey by GB&I on No. 10 and a birdie by the U.S. on No. 12 put Wu/O'Sullivan ahead, 1up, and that is how the match would end.
In the other two matches, Meghan MacLaren and Maria Dunne of GB&I defeated Sierra Brooks and Andrea Lee, 1up. Olivia Mehaffey and Bronte Law also took down Bailey Tardy and Monica Vaughn U.S., 3&2.
The teams dealt with heavy rain in the afternoon for the four ball competition that flooded several greens and forced a one hour and 40 minute suspension of play.
Maguire teamed with Thomas once again and faced O'Sullivan and Mika Liu of the United States. Liu and O'Sullivan registered a birdie on No. 1 to go 1up early, but the tandem had a bogey on the third to get the match back to all square.
A birdie by Maguire/Thomas started a string of five straight winning holes for GB&I to go 5up through nine holes. This included a chip-in eagle on the par five seventh for Maguire. The GB&I squad registered a par on No. 14 to close out the 5&4 victory.
In the other two matches, GB&I's Mehaffey/Law downed Vaughn/Wu, 3&2, and MacLaren/Dunne took down the U.S. duo of Tardy/Mariel Galdiano, 3&2.
