GREENSBORO, N.C. -- A conference-best five members of the Duke women's tennis team, senior Beatrice Capra, junior Chalena Scholl, sophomore Samantha Harris and freshmen Ellyse Hamlin and Kaitlyn McCarthy, were named to the 2016 All-ACC Academic Team, as announced by the league office Thursday. Capra and Harris each earn all-academic team recognition for the second time in their respective careers, while Scholl, Hamlin and McCarthy are each first-time honorees. All five student-athletes were also named to the All-ACC team earlier in the spring.
A student-athlete must have earned a 3.0 grade point average for the previous two semesters, as well as maintain a 3.0 cumulative average during an individual's academic career.
Capra, who recently graduated with a degree in cultural anthropology, concluded an outstanding career at Duke following the 2016 campaign, earning Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Carolina Region Senior Player of the Year honors, while also claiming her fourth consecutive All-ACC team accolade. Capra, who posted a 9-6 singles record and a 17-12 doubles mark, garnered ACC Player of the Week recognition earlier in the season after helping Duke qualify for the 2016 ITA National Women's Team Indoor Championships by defeating 13th-ranked Jasmine Lee of 29th-ranked Mississippi State to clinch the match. The Ellicott City, Md., native remained among the nation's top-40 singles players, reaching as high as 24th in the poll. Capra also qualified for the singles and doubles portion of the NCAA Tournament.
Scholl, who concluded the season ranked 59th by the ITA, posted a breakout year for the Blue Devils, recording career highs in singles wins (22) and doubles victories (21). Scholl, who split time between courts one, two, three and four, tied with Harris for the second most singles wins by any Blue Devil in 2015-16, while her 21 doubles wins also ranked second. Scholl also reached a career high in singles wins against ACC opponents with 11 and earned All-ACC Second Team accolades for the first time in her career. Scholl is currently studying computer science.
Harris, a political science major, continued her strong play in Durham, reaching 20 singles wins for the second consecutive season, while also recording double-digit ACC singles victories in back-to-back years. Harris, who posted a near-perfect 4-1 record against nationally ranked competition, broke into the ITA's singles rankings late in the season, reaching No. 118 on the national list. Harris partnered with McCarthy in doubles play to compile an 18-5 record and an 8-1 mark against conference foes.
McCarthy, who has not yet declared a major, made an immediate impact for the Blue Devils, consistently ranking among the top-55 singles players this season and earning All-ACC Second Team honors for her efforts. McCarthy earned a spot in this year's NCAA Singles Championships, where she played into the second round of the tournament. The Cary, N.C., native posted a team-best 25 singles victories, while also tying with Scholl for a team-high seven wins against nationally ranked opponents. McCarthy primarily competed on court two as a freshman, earning eight victories at the No. 2 slot. McCarthy proved equally proficient in doubles, amassing 20 wins, including 18 alongside Harris.
Hamlin, also undeclared, received third team All-ACC honors following a freshman season that saw the Fairfield, Conn., native record a 14-9 overall singles mark and a 7-6 ledger against conference opponents. Hamlin's doubles play was crucial in Duke's success, as she paired with Capra to compile a 16-9 record and earn a spot in this year's NCAA Doubles Championships. Overall, Hamlin reached 22 doubles victories, which tied with junior Alyssa Smith for the most among the Blue Devils this season.
