DURHAM, N.C. – Former Duke standout Abby Johnston secured a trip to the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio Sunday, claiming one of two spots on the U.S. Olympic Team in women's 3-meter diving.
A 2013 Duke graduate and current Duke medical student, Johnston will make her second trip to the Olympics after winning a silver medal in women's synchronized 3-meter diving four years ago in London. In that historic performance, Johnston and fellow American Kelci Bryant claimed the United States' first Olympic medal ever in a synchronized diving event.
Johnston totaled 949.30 points over three rounds of diving at the U.S. Olympic Trials this week in Indianapolis, Ind., placing her second behind only Kassidy Cook (1003.65 points).
