EUGENE, Ore. – Kicking off the first day of the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships Wednesday at Historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., graduate student Shaun Thompson represented the Blue Devils in the men's 10,000. Thompson, competing in the first NCAA Outdoor Championships of his career, captured second team All-America accolades with a 15th-place showing with a time of 29:37.41.
Running for the last time donning a Duke uniform, Thompson set the pace early on in the competition. The Blue Devil veteran led the pack over halfway through the race, clocking a 15:18.79 over the first 5,200 meters. Thompson drifted back as the race wore on, but a late surge helped the Duke distance runner hang on to secure his top-15 finish, capped by a 1:03.27 split over the final lap.
The All-America honor cements what has been an impressive Duke career for Thompson. The native of Baldwinsville, N.Y., currently holds two program records, setting the all-time mark in both the 10K (28:47.48) and the indoor 5,000 (13:47.22), while also owning the second-fastest 3,000-meter steeplechase time (8:43.64) and fourth-best outdoor 5,000 time (13:54.76).
Thursday's portion of the meet will feature the Duke women, including senior Madison Granger in the 1,500 at 7:46 p.m. (ET), senior Megan Clark and Madison Heath in the pole vault at 8 p.m., senior Anima Banks in the 800 at 9:14 p.m., and the 4x400 relay team of Teddi Maslowski, Madeline Kopp, MacKenzie Kerr and Maddy Price at 10:48 p.m. Tomorrow's action will be televised on ESPNU and ESPN, as well as streamed on ESPN3.
