OMAHA, Neb. – Rising senior Michael Miller advanced to the semifinals of the men's 100-meter butterfly and Duke graduate Ashley Twichell secured a spot in Saturday's 800 freestyle final on a banner day for the Blue Devils at the 2016 U.S. Olympic Team Trials.
Miller impressed in the 100 butterfly preliminaries, going 53.32 to shave over a second off his personal best mark of 54.48. That placed him first in his heat and 18th in the field, but a pair of scratches moved the All-ACC performer into the event semifinals.
Miller took the blocks along with the likes of Michael Phelps in Friday evening's first semifinal heat, tapping the wall sixth at 53.40 for 13th place overall.
Saturday's swims capped a strong meet for Miller, who was also 24th in the 200 butterfly and 25th in the 200 and 400 IM.
Twichell finished second in her 800 freestyle preliminary heat behind only Katie Ledecky with a personal best time of 8:28.96. Seeded 10th in the event entering the meet, Twichell turned in the third-fastest time of the morning session. The performance locked up an opportunity for the 2011 Duke graduate to vie for a spot on the U.S. Olympic Team in Saturday evening's event final, which will be broadcast on NBC.
Several other Blue Devils were in action in Friday's preliminaries, with rising sophomore Maddie Hess tying for 72nd in the women's 200 backstroke (2:17.04). Rising junior Maria Sheridan was 133rd in the same event (2:25.15).
Incoming Duke freshman Eric Strickland kicked off the morning by posting a time of 23.85 in the men's 50 freestyle, good for 155th place. Rising senior Michael Seaberg followed in 162nd with a 24.05 clocking.
Hess will be joined by Blue Devil teammates Maddie Rusch, Leah Goldman and Alyssa Marsh in the women's 50 freestyle preliminaries Saturday morning in Omaha. Incoming freshman Roger Kriegl will then hit the pool in the men's 1,500 freestyle before Twichell returns for the women's 800 freestyle final Saturday evening.
