DURHAM, N.C. – Duke graduate Sarah Bullard joined the U.S. women's national lacrosse team on a tour of England last week. The squad came away with a 5-0 record at Surrey Sports Park in Guildford – the site of the 2017 Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) World Cup.
In preparation for next year's FIL World Cup, Team USA spent a week training together and competing in five matches. The U.S. began the tour with a 21-7 victory over the English developmental squad Friday before downing Scotland (20-0) and England (20-2) Saturday. Sunday's action saw the U.S. log a pair of wins over Germany (19-1) and Wales (20-1).
A midfielder on the U.S. national team since 2008, Bullard has previously captured FIL World Cup titles with Team USA in 2009 and 2013. The 2011 Duke graduate was a two-time Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) All-America selection and two-time Tewaaraton Award nominee during her collegiate career.
Up next, Bullard will join four current members of the Duke team at the 2016-17 U.S. women's national team tryouts Aug. 5-7 at US Lacrosse headquarters in Sparks, Md. Following the three-day tryout, 36 players will be selected for the U.S. team, which will train in the lead-up to the 2017 World Cup. Ultimately, 18 players will represent the U.S. as the team goes for a third consecutive and eighth overall world title.
Bullard and recent Duke graduate Maddy Acton also continue action this summer with the Boston Storm of the United Women's Lacrosse League (UWLX). The Storm faces the Long Island Sound Friday at 7 p.m. at Boston's Lincoln Sudbury High School - Acton's alma mater.
