DURHAM, N.C. – As the top golfers in the world tee it up at CordeValle from July 7-10 in the U.S. Women's Open, junior
Leona Maguire and two-time Blue Devil All-America Brittany Lang will represent Duke in San Martin, Calif.
A product of Cavan, Ireland, Maguire will see action in her first U.S. Women's Open, after winning the Mark H. McCormack Medal last August as the leading women's golfer in the 2015 World Amateur Golf Ranking. She received invitations to both the U.S. Open and The Open Championship for winning the award.
Currently ranked No. 2 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking, Maguire has made a splash on the NCAA Division I golf scene over the last two years since arriving in Durham, N.C. The 2014-15 National Player of the Year and two-time First Team All-America, Maguire has won four tournaments with the Blue Devils and picked up numerous honors. She is on pace to represent Ireland in the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio.
Maguire is one of 26 amateurs competing this week in California.
Lang, a two-time All-America at Duke in 2004 and 2005, will also be participating this week in the U.S. Women's Open. This will mark her 12th appearance in the open and has made eight straight cuts in the tournament. Lang is coming off a tied for 14th finish a year ago in Lancaster, Pa.
In 2010, Lang tied for fifth overall with a three-over-par, 287, and in 2013 she carded a tied seventh finish with a 290. Lang, the 2004 National Freshman of the Year with the Blue Devils, registered her first career LPGA victory in 2012 when she won the Manulife Financial LPGA Classic June 24 at the Grey Silo Golf Course in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada.
Lang will open action at 10:49 a.m., off hole No. 10 along with Teresa Lu Jung Min Lee, while Maguire tees off at 3:52 p.m., on hole one with Lee Lopez and Sandra Changkija (both times are EST).
