Garavito Joins Men?s Tennis as Volunteer Assistant

DURHAM, N.C. – Duke University men's tennis head coach Ramsey Smith announced the addition of Diego Garavito to the coaching staff. Garavito will serve as a volunteer assistant coach with the Blue Devils, working with all facets of the program.
Garavito joins Duke after graduating from Bethune-Cookman with a Bachelor of Arts in May with a concentration on international business/business administration/finance.
The Colombia native was most recently a student volunteer assistant coach at Bethune-Cookman, assisting the head coach in daily duties on and off the court. Garavito was responsible for organizing and running practices for both the men's and women's teams. Given his wide network and contacts around the world, he was placed in charge of international recruiting.
“I am excited to welcome Diego to our coaching staff,” Smith said. “Diego will be working with us full time this season, and he is going to assist in many aspects of the program. Diego aspires to be head college tennis coach and is ready to put in the hard work here at Duke.”
During the 2016 campaign as a volunteer assistant coach, Garavito helped guide Bethune-Cookman to the MEAC regular season championship. A year earlier, he was an All-MEAC Second Team honoree and set the all-time singles record at the school. He was the recipient of the Leader and Encourager Award for the squad in both 2014 and 2015.
Prior to his time at Bethune-Cookman, he was the top-ranked player in Colombia, participated in multiple Futures events and visited 15 countries around the world while playing ITF tournaments.
Garavito was a summer teaching professional at the Van Der Meer Tennis Academy the last two summers, assistant and supporting the academy director on scheduling activities for summer camps. Garavito worked directly with the junior groups, as well as singles and doubles clinics, and providing private lessons scheduled by the academy.
