DURHAM, N.C.— Duke University Athletics and IMG announced on Wednesday the hiring of Chris Edwards as the new radio play-by-play broadcaster for the Blue Devil women's basketball program.
Edwards has called Duke baseball, volleyball and men's soccer matches since 2013 and was named as a top-30 broadcaster under the age of 30 by STAATalent.com. He will continue to handle broadcast responsibilities for Duke baseball and host the weekly Duke Baseball Show.
“First, let me say how honored I am to receive this assignment from IMG,” commented Edwards. “I would like to thank Pat Streko from Duke IMG and Coach McCallie for entrusting me with the broadcasts for the upcoming season. I'm thrilled for the opportunity to work with such a storied program like Duke women's basketball and cannot wait to get to work with the team in just a couple of months. I look forward to engaging with all the Duke women's basketball fans and calling a bunch of Blue Devil victories this winter.”
Since 2013, Edwards has also played an integral role with Time Warner Cable Sports Channel as a play-by-play broadcaster for basketball, football and other Olympic sports. He has also called multiple state championship broadcasts, performed sideline duties as well as hosted a studio show.
"We are excited to welcome Chris to the DWB family,” said head coach
Joanne P. McCallie. “His enthusiasm and dedication to all sports is very impressive. We look forward to having him continue to grow our coverage and spread great energy to Duke fans across the country. "
Edwards has held the Director of Broadcasting role with the Coastal Plain League since 2013 where he oversees all 14 broadcasters in the league. He provided play-by-play for the Coastal Plain League All-Star game and compiled weekly notes as well.
"We are excited to have Chris Edwards join our radio broadcasts as the new voice of Duke women's basketball,” said Pat Streko, General Manager Blue Devil IMG Sports Marketing. “The combination of Chris' experience on radio, television and at Duke made him a very attractive candidate from the very start. Our fans will certainly enjoy his knowledge of the game, his passion for Duke and the excitement he brings to our broadcasts."
A 2010 graduate of East Carolina University, Edwards received a Bachelor of Science degree in communications with a broadcast journalism concentration.
Edwards replaces the tandem of Steve Barnes and Morgan Patrick for all women's basketball broadcasts starting with the upcoming season.
