RIO DE JANEIRO – After moving up to fifth in the International Hockey Federation (FIH) world rankings last month, the U.S. women's national field hockey team looks to contend for a podium finish at the 2016 Olympic Games. Former Blue Devil Stefanie Fee and the U.S. squad open group play Saturday at 4 p.m. ET against Argentina.
All Olympic field hockey matches will be held at the Olympic Hockey Centre in Rio de Janeiro.
The U.S. women's national team will compete in its third consecutive Olympic Games. Team USA garnered a 12th-place finish in the 2012 Olympic Games in London and has previously captured one medal, a bronze, at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles.
Fee, who has been a defender on the U.S. women's national team since graduating from Duke in 2012, will make her first Olympic appearance. She has totaled over 90 caps with Team USA and helped the squad punch its ticket to Rio with a gold medal performance at the 2015 Pan American Games. Fee also helped guide the team to a bronze medal at the Champions Trophy in London earlier this summer.
A standout on the back line for the Blue Devils, Fee started every game for Duke during her four years in Durham. She garnered All-America, All-ACC and ACC All-Tournament Team accolades as a senior in 2011, in addition to being named to the Longstreth/NFHCA All-South Region first team. During her collegiate career, Fee guided the Blue Devils to a pair of NCAA quarterfinals appearances and a trip to the ACC title match in 2011.
“I could not be more proud and excited for Stef Fee!” said Duke head coach Pam Bustin, who represented the United States at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. “To represent the United States in the Olympic Games is the pinnacle for a U.S. field hockey player. It is an honor and a privilege that is earned through a dedicated work ethic and an unwavering belief. Since graduating from Duke, Stef has committed her life to becoming the elite athlete that she is today. Her sense of team, trust in the system and her professional approach to improvement have put her in the position to be selected to the 2016 Olympic Team. We could not ask for a better ambassador! Congratulations to Stef Fee from the entire Duke True Family! Go USA!”
