RIO DE JANEIRO – Former Duke standout Stefanie Fee and the U.S. women's national team made a strong statement in their opening match of the 2016 Olympic Games, knocking off Argentina by a 2-1 score Saturday at the Olympic Hockey Centre.
Entering the Olympic Games, Argentina was second in the International Hockey Federation (FIH) world rankings and Team USA fifth.
Fee came off the bench to help the U.S. defense put together an impressive performance. The unit nearly came away with a shutout, surrendering the lone score inside the final four minutes of the contest.
Overcoming a slow start in the first quarter, Team USA received a goal from Katie Reinprecht in the 35th minute and added a tally by Michelle Kasold in the fourth quarter.
The U.S. continues play in Group B Monday at 9 a.m. ET, taking on No. 3 Australia. The contest will be broadcast live on NBCSN.
