DURHAM, N.C. – With the 2016 regular season coming to a close, WNBA awards are starting to be released and Duke alumna
Elizabeth Williams has been named the 2016 WNBA Most Improved player, which was voted on by the Associated Press.
A 2015 Duke University graduate, Williams had a breakout season in 2016 with the Atlanta Dream. The 6-3 forward/center averaged 11.9 points and 8.1 rebounds on the year, which was up from 3.3 points and 3.2 rebounds a year ago.
Williams, who hails from Virginia Beach, Va., ranked fifth in the league in rebounds (8.1), second in blocks (2.3) and 28th in scoring (11.9). Her 34.7 minutes played per game ranked tied for first along with rookie Breanna Stewart. Williams started all 34 games for the Dream, while totaling five double-doubles.
The WNBA also released its peak performers for the 2016 season in three different statistical categories – scoring average, rebounding average and assists average. Williams ranked fifth in rebounding average, while 2011 Blue Devil graduate Jasmine Thomas was second with a career-best 5.1 assists per game mark.
Atlanta will open the first round of the WNBA playoffs Wednesday, Sept. 21 at 8 p.m., versus the Seattle Storm. It will be aired live on ESPNEWS.
A total of six Blue Devils will compete in the WNBA playoffs. Chelsea Gray and Alana Beard with the Los Angeles Sparks, Mistie Bass, Krystal Thomas (Seattle Storm) and Lindsey Harding (Phoenix Mercury).
