BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Blue Devils wrapped up the final day of competition at the Hokie Invite with several finishes on Duke's all-time list to go along with 13 top-five results.
Duke totaled 28 top-five finishes, seven ACC qualification times and marks and took the top spot five times.
“Our team had a very good second weekend back,” said director of track & field Norm Ogilvie. “Our goal is to improve from weekend to weekend and we did that in many different areas at the Hokie Invite. We are leaving Blacksburg happy and we're looking forward to getting better next weekend at Clemson.”
Madison Heath started competition off for Duke on a high note after notching second place in the pole vault. Heath cleared 14-0.00 (4.27), exceeding ACC qualification standards and etching her name as the No. 2 spot on Duke's all-time list.
Both of Duke's distance medley relay squads placed first and third in 10:07.85 and 10:21.25. Matt Wisner, Michal Filipczak, Alec Kunzweiler and Cole Hoff represented the first-place squad while Tom Sullivan, Kyle Francis, Michael Wilson and Stephen Garrett crossed the line third.
After a stellar performance from the sprint squad last night, the women continued their success in the 200m. Maddy Price garnered first in a time of 24.34, the third-fastest time in Duke history. India Lowe set a personal-record after stopping the clock in 24.47 to place fourth, making her time fifth on the school's all-time records list. Both Price and Lowe exceeded the ACC qualification time.
Madeline Kopp was coming off setting a school record in the 600m last night and set a new personal-best time of 24.50 in the 200m dash. Like her fellow sprinters, Kopp also surpassed the ACC standard.
Sydnei Murphy continued her impressive performance this weekend in the long jump where she qualified for ACCs. Murphy placed first with a leap of 19-10.25 (6.05), good for No. 3 on Duke's all-time list.
In the men's 800m, Francis and Dylan Murphy place first and fourth, respectively. Francis clocked in at 1:52.80 to claim his first collegiate win while Murphy crossed the line in 1:53.38.
Freshman Cassie Martin claimed her first collegiate top spot in the high jump after clearing 5-6.50 (1.69). On the men's side, Colt Sessions jumped to fourth place in 6-7.00 (2.01).
Also in women's pole vault was Nati Sheppard. Sheppard took third place with a mark of 12-8.25 (3.87).
Sarah Armstrong crossed the finish line in 2:17.37, the third fastest time in the 800m.
In addition to top-five finishes, Amarie Bremel and JR Smith set new personal-bests in the shot put and long jump, respectively. Bremel tossed the implement 41-8.75 (12.72) while Smith leaped for a 22-1.50 (6.74) mark.
The Blue Devils will be back in action next weekend as they travel to Clemson, S.C., for the Clemson ACC Challenge Jan. 27-28.
