CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The ACC released the 2017-18 preseason women's basketball polls Thursday at the annual media day in Charlotte, N.C., with the Blue Devils tabbed No. 3 in a vote by the Blue Ribbon Panel and 15 league head coaches.
Redshirt senior Lexie Brown also received preseason ACC Player of the Year by the Blue Ribbon Panel, while redshirt senior Rebecca Greenwell, freshman Mikayla Boykin and fifth-year senior Bego Faz Davalos also received recognition.
Duke, which returns four starters off its squad that totaled a 28-6 overall record a year ago, received 799 points by 60 Blue Ribbon Panel voters.
Defending ACC Champion Notre Dame totaled 858 points and 35 first place votes to take the top slot, while Louisville (5 first place votes), Duke (10 first place votes), Florida State (10 first place votes), Miami, Virginia, Syracuse, NC State, Georgia Tech, North Carolina, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest, Pittsburgh, Clemson and Boston College rounded out the predicted finish by the Blue Ribbon Panel.
Head Coach Joanne P. McCallie, who enters her 11th year with the Blue Devils, has guided the Blue Devils to three ACC Championships over the last eight years.
On the 10-member Blue Ribbon Panel Preseason All-ACC Team, Greenwell and Brown were included, while Shakayla Thomas (Florida State), Asia Durr (Louisville), Myisha Hines-Allen (Louisville), Stephanie Watts (UNC), Paris Kea (UNC), Arike Ogunbowale (Notre Dame), Marina Mabrey (Notre Dame) and Chanette Hicks (Virginia Tech) were selected.
A product of Suwanee, Ga., Brown is coming off an All-America season where she averaged 18.3 points and dished a team-best 131 assists. She also drained 73 three-pointers and hit 92.8 percent from the charity stripe. Brown was rewarded with Associated Press All-America accolades along with First Team All-ACC honors.
Greenwell, who hails from Owensboro, Ky., drilled a team-best 83 three-pointers, while averaging 16.4 points and pulling down a team-best 6.4 rebounds a game. She earned First Team All-ACC accolades for the first time in her career, after receiving Second Team All-ACC honors as a sophomore. Greenwell is only 24 three-pointers away from matching the Duke career record.
Both Boykin and Davalos were voted to the Newcomer Watch List along with Dana Evans (Louisville), Janelle Bailey (UNC) and Lili Thompson (Notre Dame).
A native of Clinton, N.C., Boykin is coming off an impressive senior campaign at Clinton H.S., where she averaged 37.4 points, 13.7 rebounds, 6.5 assists and 5.6 steals. The 5-9 guard helped guide Clinton to the state championship and was named the Gatorade North Carolina Player of the Year.
Davalos graduated from Fresno State in May and transferred to Duke over the summer. A two-time Mountain West Conference Defensive Player of the Year, Davalos is the NCAA active leader in rebounds, blocks, blocks per game and double-doubles. She averaged 14.6 points, 11.2 rebounds, 3.5 blocks, 1.8 assists and 1.5 steals. Davalos, who is from San Luis Potosi, Mexico, is only 13 blocks away from moving into a tie for 27th place on the NCAA career blocks list.
The coaches also voted on a preseason poll with Notre Dame (8 first place votes), Louisville (1 first place vote), Duke (3 first place votes), Florida State (3 first place votes), Virginia, Georgia Tech, Syracuse, Miami, North Carolina, NC State, Wake Forest, Virginia Tech, Clemson, Pittsburgh and Boston College listed.
On the Coaches' Preseason All-ACC Team were Brown (Duke), Greenwell (Duke), Thomas (Florida State), Francesca Pan (Georgia Tech), Durr (Louisville), Hines-Allen (Louisville), Kea (UNC), Ogunbowale (Notre Dame), Mabrey (Notre Dame) and Elsia Penna (Wake Forest). Durr was voted the preseason player of the year by the coaches.
Duke's Boykin along with Lorela Cubaj (Georgia Tech), Evans (Louisville), Bailey (UNC) and Thompson (Notre Dame) were on the Newcomer Watch List by the coaches.
The Blue Devils will hold their annual Blue/White scrimmage Sunday, Oct. 22 at 2 p.m., in Cameron Indoor Stadium, followed by an exhibition contest against Alaska Anchorage Sunday, Nov. 5 at 6 p.m. Both games are free admission in Cameron Indoor Stadium. The season opener for Duke will take place Friday, Nov. 12 at Grand Canyon with a 5 p.m., start time.
