Duke picked up its first two victories of the young 2017 season this past weekend. The Blue Devils used two strong second-half performances to post convincing 10-5 and 22-7 victories over High Point and Cleveland State, respectively.
Guterding Latest to Join Century Club
With an unassisted tally in the third quarter against High Point, junior attackman Justin Guterding became the 18th Blue Devil to register 100 career goals. Guterding pushed his total to 105 goals with four more versus Cleveland State. The Garden City, N.Y., native has recorded a hat trick in all three games this season and owns 21 for his career. Scoring a point in all 40 of his games as Blue Devil, Guterding has 31 multiple goal games and is currently riding a 12-game goal scoring streak. His 105 goals rank 17th in Duke history and is 30 goals away from moving into the top 10.
A Battle with No. 1 Awaits
Duke will travel to Denver this week after the Pioneers took over the No. 1 spot in both the USILA coaches and Inside Lacrosse polls. The game will mark the 15th time the Blue Devils will face the nation's top-ranked team. Duke is 6-8 in the previous 14 meetings, last earning a win over No. 1 Notre Dame in the ACC Tournament in 2015. The Pioneers also were tops in the polls when the two teams squared off in 2015. Denver outlasted Duke 17-13 in the game in Kennesaw, Ga.
Uppgren Grabs First Win Between the Pipes
Redshirt freshman goaltender Turner Uppgren picked up his first career victory between the pipes Sunday against Cleveland State. Uppgren came off the bench in the second quarter against the Vikings and made six saves and allowed just one goal in 27:10 of action. He saw his first minutes in goal Friday night, playing in the second half against High Point. He made one save and allowed one goal against the Panthers. In 57:10 in the cage, Uppgren sports a 2.10 goals against average and a .778 save percentage.
Duke Offensive Chart Climbing
Senior Jack Bruckner and Guterding continue to move up the Duke career scoring charts after their big weekends of eight and 14 points, respectively. Guterding jumped all the way up to 24th with 159 points and is four shy of passing Josh Dionne for the No. 23 spot. Bruckner is 31st with 143 and needs 16 points to take over the No. 25 position from Paul Maloney. On the career goals list, Bruckner is tied for 15th with Tony Cullen and Guterding is 17th. Both are poised to finish in the top five, while Guterding will challenge Zack Greer's record of 206. Averaging 2.63 goals per game for his career currently, Guterding will need 38 games to pass Greer. Guterding scored 95 goals in his first two seasons for a 2.56 goals per game average.
Rowe Climbing NCAA Charts
Senior faceoff specialist is off to a good start at the X, winning 75 percent of his draws and picking up 23 ground balls in the two games to move his career total to 399. He currently ranks 16th in NCAA history in career ground balls and is 76 shy of surpassing Brendan Fowler's Duke record of 474. Rowe has 239 of his ground balls at Duke and had 160 his rookie season at Stony Brook. With 635 faceoff victories Rowe ranks 22nd in NCAA history, while his .633 career win percentage at the X is among the top 20 career performances.
Bringing in the Crowd
After three non-conference home games this season, the Blue Devils rank eighth in average attendance in the country at 1,019 fans per game. Duke has played the most games and has sold at least 900 tickets per game and had a season-high 1,172 at the Cleveland State contest this past Sunday.
Second Half Defense
The Blue Devils put together a pair of outstanding second halves defensively over the weekend. Duke allowed just two goals and only 20 shots in the 60 minutes. On the strength of outstanding faceoff play, especially Friday night, the Blue Devils won the ground ball battle 36-21 overall in the two games. Duke was trailing Cleveland State by three in the category at halftime and ended up two in front at the end of the game. In three games this season, Duke has outscored its opponents 19-8 and outshot them 58-36.
More Firsts for Blue Devils
A trio of offensive players for the Blue Devils tallied their first collegiate goals over the weekend. Rookie Ryan Hastings got in the scoring column twice with two markers against Cleveland State. Classmate Reilly Walsh netted a goal and an assist against the Vikings and redshirt freshman Sean Lowrie found the back of the cage for the first time in his career.
