DURHAM, N.C. – Fresh off a 5-2 victory Wednesday against rival N.C. State, the Duke men's tennis team is right back in action this weekend, hosting Boston College and traveling to No. 2 Virginia. The Blue Devils begin the weekend with an even ACC record at 2-2.
All regular season men's tennis home events at Ambler Tennis Stadium are free to the public. General public parking is available in the Blue Zone parking lot off of Duke University Road.
Boston College Series History
Duke is 13-0 against the Eagles, who are 3-7 overall and 0-2 in the ACC this year … The series began in 2006, when Boston College joined the ACC … Duke has swept 11 of the 13 matches, yielding points in only 2010 and 2016 … The Blue Devils are 5-0 in Durham against the Eagles … In their singles dual match careers, Catalin Mateas, Ryan Dickerson and Nicolas Alvarez are 1-0 against Boston College while TJ Pura is 2-1.
Scouting the Eagles
Holding down the No. 1 singles slot for Boston College has been senior Aidan McNulty, who is 3-6 … Classmate Hank Workman and freshman Derek Austin have split time in the second position with Workman 2-4 and Austin 2-2 … Austin (3-0), Workman (0-3) and freshman Sean Mullins (2-2) have all experienced action at No. 3 … In doubles, five duos have played on court one and six on court two … Austin and Mullins have been the most successful group with a 2-2 ledger overall, going 0-2 at No. 2 and 2-0 at No. 3.
Virginia Series History
Duke holds a 51-40 lead in the all-time series, which dates back to 1927 … The Cavaliers have cut into the Blue Devils' lead with 15 consecutive triumphs, and 19 wins in the last 20 meetings … Duke's last win in Durham was a 7-0 victory on March 5, 2003 … Prior to Virginia's 19-1 run, the Blue Devils won 22 straight matches from 1985-2003.
Scouting the Cavaliers
Winner of nine of the last 10 ACC Tournament championships and 2016 NCAA champion, Virginia heads into Sunday's match with a 15-0 overall record and 2-0 mark in the league … The Cavaliers are led by junior Collin Altamirano and senior Thai-Son Kwiatkowski … The two have split time in the No. 1 spot with Kwiatkowski 5-0 there and Altamirano 4-3 … Kwiatkowski is ranked No. 6 in the Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll, 14-3 overall and 5-0 versus ranked opponents while Altamirano is No. 64, 5-4 overall and 2-4 against nationally ranked foes … Kwiatkowski has a 6-1 mark on court two with Altamirano 1-1 there and senior J.C. Aragone, ranked No. 104, 4-0 … Junior Alexander Ritschard has excelled this spring with a 12-1 record, going 4-0 at No. 3 … Freshman Carl Soderlund is 6-0 with a 5-0 ledger on court three … In doubles, senior Luca Corinteli and Soderlund are ranked 25th, hold a 4-1 record on court one and share time with Kwiatkowski and Ritschard, who are 4-0 in the top position … Kwiatkowski and Ritschard are also 5-0 on court two while Corinteli and junior Henrik Wiersholm are ranked No. 49 and own a 3-0 record in the second slot.
Mateas Named ACC Player of the Week
Coming off the highest ranked win of his career, sophomore Mateas was named the ACC Player of the Week on Tuesday morning … It is the first league weekly honor of his career … He joins freshman Nick Stachowiak as Blue Devils to be named the league's player of the week this season … Mateas earned the highest ranked win of his career last Thursday at No. 10 UCLA, topping No. 11 Gage Brymer 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 on court one … Mateas' victory was his first against a ranked opponent since downing No. 73 Carlos Benito of Georgia Tech at the ITA All-American Championships in October … Mateas' previous-high win came against No. 41 Aron Hiltzik of Illinois on January 29, 2016.
Tough at Home
Duke heads into Friday's match with an 8-1 home record, falling only to No. 2 Wake Forest in its last home contest … This year marks a rebound as the Blue Devils finished 7-9 in Durham a season ago … Duke turned in an unbeaten mark of 16-0 at home during the 2014-15 campaign.
“We always play well here,” head coach Ramsey Smith said. “We have a lot of support. We're comfortable with the courts. We've been really consistent with the energy we come out with in doubles at home. We've played great doubles, which has set the tone.”
Another Road Challenge for Duke
The Blue Devils face their fifth top-10 opponent this season Sunday at Virginia … It will be the seventh road match of the campaign and sixth versus foes ranked within the top 20 … Duke has faced No. 15 Kentucky, No. 17 Illinois, No. 9 Northwestern, No. 5 North Carolina and No. 10 UCLA all on the road … The Blue Devils faced just five total top-20 clubs a year ago, and just one on the road … Duke has not faced five top-10 squads in a single season since taking on five during the 2013-14 season.
Doubles Giving Duke a Lift
In Duke's first 15 matches, the club has captured the doubles point 11 times (73.3 percent) … A year ago, the Blue Devils played 26 matches and won just 11 doubles points (42.3 percent) … This year, Duke has won seven of the 10 matches in which it has taken the early 1-0 lead … The only three setbacks were on the road at No. 15 Kentucky, No. 17 Illinois and No. 10 UCLA.
The Streak is Stopped
The Blue Devils' Wednesday victory against N.C. State snapped a three-match losing streak … During Smith's eight-plus years as Duke's head coach, the program has endured just three losing streaks of four or more matches … The win also snapped a two-match slide against ACC foes … Duke has lost back-to-back league matches only five times under Smith.
Three Appear in ITA Rankings
Duke has three ranked singles players in the Oracle/ITA poll, led by junior Alvarez at No. 22 ... Freshman Spencer Furman earned the first ranking of his career, appearing at No. 76 while Mateas picked up the second-highest ranking of his career at No. 95 … For one week a year ago, Mateas was No. 91 … It is the first time the Blue Devils have had three ranked singles players since the end of the 2014-15 season, when Alvarez, Jason Tahir and Raphael Hemmeler were all ranked.
Last Time Out
A strong performance in doubles and from the middle of the singles lineup led the Duke men's tennis team to a 5-2 victory against N.C. State on Wednesday at Ambler Tennis Stadium … For the second-straight match, it was doubles wins at No. 2 and No. 3 that gave the Blue Devils the early 1-0 lead … Sophomores Dickerson and Jason Lapidus turned a 1-1 tie into a 4-1 lead against Michael Ogden and Ivan Saveljic on court two before winning … Court three finished the point for the Blue Devils as senior Pura and Mateas played the exact same pattern as court two to earn a 6-2 victory versus Igor Saveljic and Georgiy Malyshev … Pushing the lead to 2-0 was Dickerson, who was quickly off the singles court with a 6-1, 6-1 win on court five against Sean Burnette … The Blue Devils made it a 3-0 lead from court three, where Stachowiak defeated Malyshev 6-1, 6-2 … N.C. State tallied its first point from the first position with No. 87 Nick Horton defeating No. 95 Mateas 6-3, 6-3 … The Wolfpack closed the deficit to 3-2 with an Ogden 7-6 (5), 6-1 triumph over Lapidus on court six … Pura clinched the match for the Blue Devils, upending Igor Saveljic 6-3, 6-3 on court four … Finishing the match was No. 76 Furman on court two with a comeback 1-6, 6-4, 7-5 victory against No. 92 Alexis Galarneau.
