DURHAM, N.C. – Duke University senior Lizzy Raben has become the second Blue Devil senior this spring to sign a professional soccer contract overseas as she inked a deal with AC Sparta Praha in Czech Republic this week.
"I'm so excited to be joining AC Sparta Praha and incredibly grateful to my family, friends, teammates, and coaches for helping me to get here,” commented Raben. “I am looking forward to a new adventure and a new chapter in my soccer career!"
Following a one week trial at Sparta recently Raben inked the deal, which will begin following graduation in May. The Czech season will run through the end of June and then will have a one-month break before starting training for the 2017-18 campaign in early August.
Raben, a native of Greenwood Village, Colo., was a key component of Duke's standout defense a year ago. She started all 23 matches and appeared in 1,812 minutes for the Blue Devils. Raben, CoSIDA Academic All-District III first team selection and All-ACC Academic team honoree, helped lead the Blue Devils to 38 shutouts in four years with the Blue Devils. She started 82-of-89 career matches and played a total of 6,964 minutes over her career.
Sparta Praha is currently in second place in the eight-team Czech Women's League, three points behind leaders Slavia Praha. Sparta has a history of participation in the Women's Champions League including an opening round appearance in 2016. A dominant side in the Czech Republic, Sparta Praha has won 18 of the 23 titles won in the country.
