What Happened in Last Meeting...
In Duke's final regular season game in Cameron Indoor Stadium for the 2016-17 campaign, the Blue Devils secured perfection at home by upending Miami by a score of 83 to 70 on senior day. Redshirt Junior Rebecca Greenwell recorded yet another double-double, finishing with 22 points and 13 rebounds. Teammate Lexie Brown dominated the points category as well, putting together an impressive 28-point afternoon.
In an opening quarter characterized by noteworthy ball movement and play in transition, the Blue Devils managed to jump out to an early lead that would propel their offensive output for the remainder of the contest. Greenwell led the charge for the first 10 minutes, scoring 7 of the 18 total points. Following a handful of turnovers, Duke was able to capitalize through efficient passing in and around the paint.
In the second frame, Miami's offense found its bearings as an 10-0 run would enable the Hurricanes to retake the lead for the first time since the early minutes of the first quarter. That stretch would continue until a Lexie Brown three cut the deficit to three. The Hurricanes would answer with a quick bucket of their own, furthering the gap. Following a back-and-forth, shot-for-shot handful of minutes, the Blue Devils would find their rhythm again on defense, slowing the Miami momentum as the first half wound down.
With 11 seconds to play in the second quarter, Greenwell would finesse her way into the paint, tip in an Erin Mathias miss, and earn a trip to the charity stripe in the process. The Owensboro, Ky. native's added point would prove to be the go-ahead shot, giving the Blue Devils a 32-31 lead heading into the locker room. Senior Kendall Cooper finished the first 20 minutes with eight points, behind only Greenwell and Brown who both tallied 10.
Brown stayed hot in the third quarter, scoring four quick points to extend Duke's lead. Miami would claw back, cutting the deficit to one, only to be deterred by consecutive three-pointers by Brown. The Blue Devils managed to extend their lead to 13, but it would be reduced temporarily due to stingy defensive play and a handful of tough shots made by the Hurricanes. The third quarter would end with Duke up 57-48, thanks due in part to Brown's ten-point outburst.
Rebecca Greenwell started the final frame with a successful bucket, getting fouled on the way to the ground, a play that energized both the offense and the Cameron faithful as the Blue Devils took their lead and ran with it. After a couple of additional shots made by Greenwell and Brown, a tired Hurricane defense showed their fatigue in the form of fouls against the Blue Devils. An electric Duke offense would not be contained as the final minutes ticked off the clock, and as a result, the Blue Devils would win their seventh straight game.
Kendall Cooper finished with 12 points, and teammate Leaonna Odom finished with 11.
For Miami, Senior Adrienne Motley led the way with 23 points and three rebounds.
Blue Devils to Face Alum...
Duke will battle former Blue Devil All-America Katie Meier for the 15th time as a head coach on Sunday. Meier, who is in her 12th year as Miami's head coach, also faced the Blue Devils on Nov. 29, 2001, when she was at the helm of Charlotte, and the last 13 years as the Hurricanes' coach. In the contest versus Charlotte, Duke won 64-39 in Charlotte, N.C.
Meier, who ranks fifth on Duke's all-time scoring list with 1,761 points, was inducted into the Hall of Honor in 2002. She was the 1986 ACC Rookie of the Year and a Basketball Yearbook Freshman All-America. She was a letterwinner in 1986, '87, '89 and '90 for the Blue Devils.
