DURHAM, N.C. – Duke sophomore catcher Chris Proctor has been named to the 2017 Johnny Bench Award Watch List as announced by the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission Thursday. The prestigious award is given annually to the nation's top NCAA Division I catcher.
As a freshman in 2016, started 46 games and hit .281 with a double, two triples, 17 RBI and 16 walks. Proctor missed Duke's first two weekends due to injury, but has recently returned to the Blue Devil lineup.
The Lawndale, N.C., native is one of 85 catchers on the initial watch list and one of seven ACC catchers acknowledged, joining Georgia Tech's Joey Bart, Wake Forest's Ben Breazeale, Louisville's Colby Fitch, Notre Dame's Ryan Lidge, Florida State's Cal Raleigh and Clemson's Chris Williams.
The initial watch list will be updated to include other candidates until May 1. The watch list is then narrowed down to a group of semifinalists, which will be announced May 17. From there, ballots will be sent to a national voting panel to determine the three finalists (announced June 5). A final vote among the national committee will occur during the College World Series. All finalists will be brought to Wichita and the winner will be announced at the 19th Annual Great Wichita Sports Banquet on June 29.
Proctor and the Blue Devils begin ACC play against Virginia Tech this weekend at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
