JACKSONVILLE, N.C. – Duke's B team performed impressively in the 46th Intercollegiate Golf Championship, tallying an 851 (-13) mark for their weekend at the Paradise Point Golf Course on the grounds of the Camp Lejeune Marine Corps Base.
Finishing just one shot behind tournament champion Methodist, the Blue Devils mirrored the consistency of their teammates who were taking part in the Mason Rudolph Championship in Franklin, Tenn. over the weekend, as they too battled unfavorable weather conditions that made the course extra challenging. Additionally, the Scarlet Course on Friday had a par of 70 whereas the Gold Course used for Saturday and Sunday had a par of 72.
Andrew Bieber finished atop the leaderboard with a gutsy 210 (-4) performance that featured the overcoming of delays early on in the tournament due to heavy rain. The senior shot a 68 (-2), 70 (-2) and a 72 (E), respectively, to give him his lowest tournament score this season.
Bieber credits his success over the weekend to the positive attitude he maintained throughout the starts and stops caused by the weather. However, it was the time spent with the marine corps veterans that truly motivated him.
“One of the best parts of the tournament was playing with the veterans,” Bieber said. “Being around those guys put golf into perspective for me. When you take into account the sacrifices they made, any mistakes or missed shots on a golf course can't really get you too down. It was an awesome experience.”
Teammates Ben Silverman and Steven DiLisio both finished with 211 (-3) stroke totals, just one shot behind team and tournament leader Bieber. Silverman opened the tournament with his best round this year (65, -5), as did DiLisio (66, -4).
Freshman Harrison Taee started off with consecutive 75 (+5, +3) efforts on Friday and Saturday, but was able to round out his weekend with a 71 (-1) performance to put him at 221 (+7).
Rounding out Duke's lineup was sophomore Shrish Dwivedi, who scored a 73 (+3), 76 (+4) and a 78 (+6), respectively, giving him a 227 (+13) stroke total for the event.
Duke's next tournament will be the Wolfpack Spring Open at the Lonnie Poole Golf Course in Raleigh, N.C. The two-day event will take place on Apr. 14 and 15.
