GREENSBORO, N.C. – After wrapping up the regular season Friday with a 4-3 victory at No. 39 Louisville, 38th-ranked Duke has earned the No. 5 seed in the 2017 Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Tennis Championship, which runs from Wednesday to Sunday at the Rome Tennis Center at Berry College in Rome, Ga. The Blue Devils will play the winner of the No. 12 seed Miami versus No. 13 seed Boston College at 1 p.m. Thursday.
Last Sunday, Duke (15-8, 8-4 ACC) picked up a 6-1 win against Miami as sophomore Catalin Mateas clinched the match with a 6-4, 6-2 victory against Christian Langmo on court two. Duke captured the doubles point and the first five singles decisions to lead 6-0 before the Hurricanes won the final match. Duke swept Boston College in March with freshman Nick Stachowiak earning the clincher on court three by downing Sean Mullins 6-3, 6-3. If the Blue Devils net a win Thursday, they would face No. 4 seed Georgia Tech on Friday at 1 p.m.
Duke's 2017 lineup has featured plenty of depth with senior TJ Pura leading the way in league play with an 11-0 record, tied for the most ACC victories in a year by a Blue Devil. Pura, who clinched four of Duke's eight ACC wins, is 28-9 overall and has won his last eight matches. Stachowiak owns the most wins on the squad with 30, tied for the 10th most by a Duke freshman in program history, and is tied for the top spot with three ranked wins. He pieced together a 14-match winning streak from January 9 – March 7, the longest by a Blue Devil or Duke rookie since Pura's 14-match run from November 1, 2013 – April 25, 2014. Freshman Spencer Furman leads Duke with three wins in ACC play against nationally ranked opponents. He owns five ACC victories, including two from the No. 1 singles position. Mateas has played the most matches at No. 1, going 5-5 there and posting an 8-3 league ledger, including seven consecutive ACC victories. Mateas was tabbed the March 21 ACC Player of the Week while Stachowiak was the March 7 selection.
In doubles, Stachowiak and Furman have formed Duke's most successful team, winning their first 13 matches, the longest streak for a Blue Devil pair since Henrique Cunha and Raphael Hemmeler won 16 straight from March 5 – May 16, 2013. Court two has been anchored by sophomores Ryan Dickerson and Jason Lapidus while Mateas and Pura are the usual No. 3 pair.
In this week's Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll, Furman is ranked No. 87 while Mateas is No. 100. Stachowiak and Furman make a 39-spot rocket up the chart to No. 22 after standing at No. 61 last week.
Wake Forest is seeded No. 1 while Virginia received the No. 2 seed and North Carolina the three seed. In the latest Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll, the Demon Deacons are No. 1 nationally with the Cavaliers third and Tar Heels 12th.
Championship action will begin Wednesday at 10 a.m. with the lone men's match of the day as Miami versus Boston College.
The Saturday 10 a.m. semifinal match featuring the highest seeded team and Sunday's 10 a.m. championship match will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra.
