DURHAM, N.C. – Great Britain & Ireland (GB&I) has announced its eight-member team that will represent GB&I at the 2017 Vagliano Trophy, which will take place June 29 to July 1 and hosted by the Golf Club Bogogno in Italy. Duke University junior Leona Maguire will compete in her second straight Vagliano Trophy as she last appeared on the squad in 2015.
Maguire will be joined on the GB&I team by Gemma Clews, India Clyburn, Maria Dunne, Alice Hewson, Sophie Lamb, Olivia Mehaffey and Annabel Wilson. The squad will be captained by Elaine Farquharson-Black.
The Vagliano Trophy began as a match between Great Britain & Ireland (GB&1) and France in 1931 and was played annually until 1939 and again after World War 11 in 1947 and 1949, it became a biennial event thereafter. Since 1959, the match has been played between GB&I and a team representing the Continent of Europe. The Vagliano Trophy, given by French golfer Andre Vagliano, was last played at Malone Golf Club, Belfast, in 2015 in which the Continent of Europe emerged victorious for a 5th consecutive time.
In 2015, Maguire and the GB&I squad made a valiant comeback, but ended up falling 12.5 to 11.5 to Europe at the Malone Golf Club in Ireland. Duke alumna Celine Boutier was on the victorious Europe team.
Maguire, the No. 1 ranked amateur in the world, is coming off a runner-up placement at the NCAA Championship and earning her second PING WGCA National Player of the Year accolade. She totaled a Duke/ACC record 70.29 stroke average in 2016-17, which was the lowest in the NCAA since 2002. Maguire, who hails from Cavan, Ireland, registered three wins, eight top five finishes, nine rounds in the 60s and did not finish lower than sixth in 10 tournaments on the season.
