SOUTH WALES – The Duke University tandem of Leona Maguire and Ana Belac advanced to match play Wednesday of the 114th Ladies' British Open Amateur Championship following 36 holes of stroke play qualifying at the Pyle & Kenfig Golf Club in South Wales.
Maguire carded rounds of 70 and 72 to finish eighth with an even-par, 142. In the first round, Maguire totaled five birdies on her way to carding a one-under-par, 70, on Tuesday. She added a one-over, 72, Wednesday as she totaled one birdie on the fifth hole. A product of Cavan, Ireland, added 15 pars and bogeys on No. 4 and No. 10.
Coming off a solid freshman campaign, Belac signed for rounds of 70 and 78 to finish 47th with a 148. Belac, who is from Portoroz, Slovenia, had three birdies in round one on her way to shooting under par, but struggled with four double-bogeys in round two on her way to shooting a 78.
After a first round of 73, rising senior Lisa Maguire finished 105th overall as she turned in an 82 on Wednesday.
Match play will kick off Thursday with Maguire versus Elena Hualde Zuniga of Spain, while Belac will go up against Leonie Harm of Germany.
