ITALY – Duke rising junior Virginia Elena Carta and the Continent of Europe claimed the 2017 Vagliano Trophy Saturday with a record 15-9 ledger over Blue Devil rising senior Leona Maguire and the Great Britain & Ireland (GB&I) squad at Circolo Golf Bogogno in Italy.
After featuring a 6-6 score following day one of action, Europe registered wins in all four foursome matches on Saturday morning to go ahead, 10-6. Carta teamed with Albane Valenzuela for Europe and downed Gemma Clews and Sophie Lamb, 4&3. Leona Maguire and Olivia Mehaffey of GB&I faced Matilda Castren and Morgane Metraux and lost by a 3&2 ledger.
The Duke teammates then had to face off in singles play in the afternoon. A product of Udine, Italy, Carta was able to prevail over Maguire, 1-up. Carta finished the two days of action with a 2-1-1 record. Europe collected five singles wins in the afternoon to finish with a 15-9 victory.
The win for the Continent of Europe marked the sixth consecutive victory at the Vagliano Trophy.
