DURHAM, N.C. – Duke redshirt senior center Austin Davis has been named to the preseason Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award Watch List. The award is given annually to the nation's outstanding Division I college offensive player who meets one or more of the following criteria: 1. Born in Texas 2. Graduated from a Texas high school or 3. Played at a Texas-based junior college or four-year college.
The player must also exhibit the enduring characteristics that define Earl Campbell, including integrity, performance, teamwork, sportsmanship, community, and tenacity – specifically tenacity to persist, drive, determination to overcome adversity and injury in pursuit of reaching goals.
Davis, a 6-4, 290-pound Mansfield, Texas, product, has earned preseason All-ACC selections by Athlon Sports (2nd team) and Phil Steele's College Football Preview (4th team). Last month he was named to the watch lists for the Rimington Trophy and Outland Trophy. He has started 12 consecutive games and played 996 career snaps.
Last year, Davis earned the program's Dan “Tiger” Hill Award as the most outstanding offensive lineman. He was also a member of Duke's offensive front that helped produce four 200-200 performances as the Blue Devils posted 200+ rushing and 200+ passing yards versus N.C. Central, Notre Dame, Georgia Tech and North Carolina. Davis had the ground game continuing to pound away, rushing for 227 yards versus No. 15 North Carolina, 227 yards against No. 23 Virginia Tech and 254 yards at Georgia Tech, marking the first time during head coach David Cutcliffe's tenure that the Blue Devils carded three consecutive games of 200+ rushing yards against ACC opponents.
The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award Selection Committee will be comprised of Texas-based journalists and college football dignitaries and, in subsequent years, each of the all-time winners. This year, the selection committee will narrow the field to up to 16 semifinalists in November and up to five finalists in December. The recipient of the award will be announced in January of 2018.
