Duke Alumna Twichell Named to U.S. National Team

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Duke alumna Ashley Twichell has been named to USA Swimming's 2017-18 national team, as announced by the organization Friday. Twichell was one of 115 athletes to earn a spot on the national team, which is comprised of the top six swimmers in each individual Olympic event.

Twichell was selected to the 12-member open water national team after capturing a world title in the open water five-kilometer event over the summer at the FINA World Aquatic Championships in Budapest, Hungary. The 2011 Duke graduate also won a silver medal as a member of the United States' 5K team relay to become the first American athlete with four career FINA World Championships open water medals.

A native of Fayetteville, N.Y., Twichell also earned national team honors in the pool in the women's 800-meter and 1500m freestyle events. She took home a gold medal in the 800m freestyle last month at the U.S. Open and added second-place finishes in the 400m and 1500m freestyle.

During her career at Duke, Twichell was an All-American and All-ACC champion in the 1,650-yard freestyle. She qualified for the NCAA Championship all four seasons and as a freshman was the first Blue Devil swimmer to compete at the national meet in four years.

As a senior in 2011, Twichell guided the Duke women to a top-20 finish at NCAAs for the first time in school history, placing a career-best fifth in the mile. Also an Academic All-American, she remains the women's program record holder in the 500, 1,000 and 1,650-yard freestyle events.
