DURHAM, N.C. – The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and the Women's Basketball Coaches Association announced Monday the final candidates for the 2018 Nancy Lieberman Award with Duke fifth-year senior Lexie Brown one of 10 selections.
Now in its 19th year, the award recognizes the top point guard in women's NCAA Division I college basketball. Candidates exhibit the floor leadership, play-making and ball-handling skills of 1996 Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame inductee Nancy Lieberman.
One of the best all-around players in NCAA Division I, Brown currently averages 20.4 points, 4.9 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 3.7 steals. The 5-9 guard leads the ACC in both points and steals, while also ranking tied fourth in three-point field goal percentage (43.1), tied seventh in free throw percentage (82.4) and eighth in three-point field goals made (2.3). Nationally, Brown ranks 24th in scoring, seventh in steals and 31st in three-point field goal percentage (43.1).
Along with Brown on the list include Kia Nurse (UConn), AJ Alix (Florida State), Katelynn Flaherty (Michigan), Kelsey Mitchell (Ohio State), Sabrina Ionescu (Oregon), Jessica Kovatch (St. Francis (PA)), Tiana Mangakahia (Syracuse), Brooke McCarty (Texas) and Jordin Canada (UCLA).
A native of Suwanee, Ga., Brown recently became the third NCAA Power Five Conference player to record over 1,800 points, 500 assists, 300 steals and 200 made three-point field goals. She holds an ACC-best 21-game streak with at least one three-pointer made and is the only player in the ACC with five straight contests with 20 or more points.
In March, five finalists will be presented to Ms. Lieberman and the Hall of Fame's selection committee. Fans will also have the opportunity to vote for their favorite finalists to determine the Naismith Starting five at www.hoophallawards.com.
