ALPHARETTA, Ga. – Senior Alex Smalley and sophomore Adrien Pendaries each shot rounds of four-under 68, with Pendaries acing the par-three 17th, to highlight the opening the round of the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate Invitational Friday outside Atlanta.
Pendaries capped his round with the hole-in-one on the 226-yard par-3 17th, ripping a five-iron for his first competitive ace as a Blue Devil. It is the second straight year a Duke player has recorded an ace after Jake Shuman had one at last spring's Valspar Collegiate Championship.
“I did a good job of scoring today,” said Pendaries. “I didn't have my A-game, but limited the mistakes and made some good putts for birdie – and a hole-in-one is always a nice bonus. I'm excited for the team, we shot under par today but have much more in the tank. We have performed very well on second days recently so I think we are all excited to get out tomorrow and try to move up the leaderboard.”
Pendaries backup his ace with a birdie the par-5 18th to sign for 68 his. He and Smalley, who birdied six holes including the 18th, are tied for seventh after 18 holes.
As a team, the No. 2 Blue Devils posted a two-under 286 and are tied for fifth with 36 holes remaining. Third-ranked Georgia Tech, the tournament's host, leads after an opening-round 270. No. 15 Clemson and No. 11 Wake Forest are tied for second (276), with No. 10 USC in fourth (278). Duke is part of a four-way tie for fifth.
Junior Chandler Eaton posted a 74 on Friday, followed by sophomore Evan Katz (76) and junior Steven DiLisio (82).
Round 2 begins tomorrow at 8:30 a.m. ET as the Blue Devils are paired with Texas A&M and Virginia.
