Oh How Sweep It Is...
The first home ACC series in program history was one that will go down in the record books for the Blue Devils, as they earned their first conference win, series victory and series sweep against the Boston College Eagles March 16-18. Duke won in walkoff fashion Friday night on a BC passed ball with Jazmine Moreno on third, came back from down three on Saturday to secure the series W and broke a scoreless tie with a run in the sixth to sweep the series on Sunday.
St. George Shines Against BC...
After a rough stretch to start off the month of March, freshman Peyton St. George came back with a vengeance against the Eagles, showing out in the circle and at the plate. St. George went 3-0, all relief appearances, not allowing a single run, only eight hits and striking out five through 8.2 innings of work. At the plate, St. George went 3-for-6 with a double and a .667 slugging percentage.
Making It Raine...
Ever since blasting a pair of home runs in the second game of the series at North Carolina, sophomore Raine Wilson has been on a tear at the plate. She is 14-for-26 in her last 10 games, turning in 11 RBI, seven runs, three home runs, two doubles and her first-career triple. She also sports a 1.038 slugging percentage and a .613 OBP in that stretch.
That stretch has pushed Wilson into the team lead in batting average (.409), slugging percentage (.667), on-base percentage (.519) and home runs (3). Her BA, SLG% and OBP all rank inside the top six of the ACC.
Duke Picks Up First Midweek Victory...
After only facing non-conference opponents in tournament play for the first four weekends of the season, the Blue Devils finally were able to play in a midweek contest, heading to Charleston for a March 14 doubleheader. Duke took the first contest, 5-1, before falling in a heartbreaking 9-8 walk-off loss in game two. Kavel Leading (Off) The Way...
Jameson Kavel has been the catalyst for the Blue Devil offense throughout the first six weekends, leading the team in seven different offensive categories and helping Duke to a 14-9 record when leading off the lineup. Kavel, who is also tied for the team lead with eight multi-hit games, is 18-for-34 (.529) in reaching base when leading off an inning. In her 23 contests as the Blue Devils' leadoff hitter, she is 27-for-83 (.325) with 19 runs, 12 RBI, seven doubles, three triples and a home run, which she earned in Duke's 5-0 win against Morgan State (Feb. 23).
Early Inning Success...
Duke has found a majority of its offensive firepower in the early innings of its first 26 contests. The Blue Devils have 111 total runs scored so far this season, with 47 of those coming in the first three frames. Production has ramped up in the middle innings as well, with 54 of Duke's runs coming from the fourth to the sixth innings. Duke has scored 22 in the both the first and fourth, the most of any frame.
Double The Fun...
Through its first 26 games, Duke has tallied 42 doubles. That total stands tied for second in the conference. The Blue Devils' 1.62 doubles per game average is second in the ACC and 25th nationally. Jameson Kavel leads the Blue Devils with eight doubles this year. A total of 13 Blue Devils have recorded a double through the program's first five weekends, with 10 having tallied multiple.
Pitching Success...
Perhaps the strongest point of Duke's game after its first 26 games of competition is its pitching unit. With a 1.82 ERA, the Blue Devils' staff stands second overall in the ACC in team pitching and enters the week ranked 30th in the nation.
Amelia Wiercioch tops the team with a 1.35 ERA, which is fourth in the ACC and 49th nationally, and 45 strikeouts. Peyton St. George is second in K's with 41 and stands seventh in the ACC with a 1.74 ERA and fourth in the league, 87th nationally with 7.1 strikeouts per seven innings.
Katherine Huey paces the team in the win column with seven victories. Huey busted onto the scene in her first weekend in the collegiate game, tallying the program's first win (Feb. 8 at FAU-1) and first complete game shutout (Feb. 9 vs. Michigan State) before earning espnW's National Player of the Week honors after the second weekend of play.
Kavel A Terror On The Base Paths...
She's led off the lineup in 23 games, leads Duke with 93 at-bats and 30 hits and has team highs in doubles (8) and triples (3). But perhaps the best part of Jameson Kavel's game so far? Her speed.
Through 26 games, Kavel has been a terror for opposing pitchers and catchers, going 11-for-12 in stolen bases. She currently averages 0.42 a game, good for third in the ACC and 99th nationally. Her 11 total stolen bases also rank third in the conference.
Making Sacrifices...
Sometimes to be great, you've got to make some sacrifices. And for Rachel Abboud and Jazmine Moreno, they've been doing just that, excelling on the sacrifice fly/sac bunt front. Overall, the Blue Devils have tallied 25 sacrifice hits and scored seven runs on sacrifice flies. Abboud leads the ACC and is fourth in the nation with four sac flies, while Moreno's 0.35 sac hits per game are tops in the ACC and fifth in the NCAA. Moreno's nine sac bunts also stands first in the conference.
On Deck…
After the pair of midweek contests, the Blue Devils will return home for an ACC weekend showdown against Louisville. First pitch in the Friday, March 23 series opener is set for 5 p.m. ET, with first pitches on Saturday and Sunday set for 1 p.m. and 12 p.m. All three contests will be live streamed on ACC Network Extra, which fans can access through WatchESPN.com and the ESPN app.
