DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke fencing program garnered four of six Atlantic Coast Conference Fencer of the year Awards following the 2018 season, as announced by the conference office Wednesday.
Senior Pascual Di Tella, juniors Bryn Hammarberg and Rhiannon Harvey and sophomore Eoin Gronningsater captured individual awards for the Blue Devils.
Duke, which captured the ACC Men's Fencing title for the first time in league history, dominated the male awards across the board as the awards were determined by a vote of the league's four head coaches.
Di Tella was named ACC Fencer of the Year in men's saber for the second-consecutive year, Hammarberg notched ACC Fencer of the year in men's epee while Harvey and Gronningsater swept ACC Fencer of the Year in both men's and women's foil.
This is the first year a Blue Devil has garnered ACC Fencer of the Year in foil for both the men and women as Notre Dame swept the accolade for three-consecutive years. This is also the first ACC Fencer of the Year honor for the women across all weapons since Jennifer Ling received the award in 2016 in saber.
Di Tella, Hammarberg and Gronningsater shared Most Valuable Fencer honors at the 2018 ACC Fencing Championships and were also named members of the All-ACC fencing team following their impressive performances.
Di Tella, a product of Vicente Lopez, Buenos Aires, Argentina, picked up ACC Fencer of the Year in men's saber accolades in 2017 and earned ACC Co-Fencer of the Year in 2016.
A native of Maplewood, N.J., Hammarberg collected his first ACC Fencer of the Year accolade as a freshman in 2016.
Di Tella, Hammarberg, Harvey and Gronningsater will return to the strips at the NCAA Championships alongside sophomore Agoston Walter and freshmen Julia Gianneschi and Brycen Rushing. The event will take place March 22-25 on the campus of Penn State in State College, Pa.
