DURHAM, N.C. – For the third time in her storied collegiate career, Duke University fifth-year senior Lexie Brown has been selected an Associated Press All-America, as announced Monday. Brown was named to the third team as a sophomore at Maryland and during her junior and senior campaigns at Duke.
Last season, Brown became the first collegiate student-athlete to receive Associated Press All-America honors at two different schools and Monday she became the 41st player in NCAA history to earn the honor three times.
Brown received third team honors along with Napheesa Collier (UConn), Teaira McCowan (Miss. State), Jordin Canada (UCLA) and Myisha Hines-Allen (Louisville).
Only two other Blue Devils have received three AP All-America honors over their career – Alana Beard and Elizabeth Williams – and their jerseys hang in the Duke rafters.
A native of Suwanne, Ga., Brown turned in one of the best individual seasons in Duke and ACC history by averaging 19.4 points, 4.4 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 3.7 steals for the Blue Devils. Her 122 steals were a new Duke single-season mark, breaking Duke great Alana Beard's record of 114. The 5-9 guard collected an impressive 14 steals over her final two collegiate contests against 18th-ranked Georgia and top-ranked Connecticut.
The 2018 ACC Defensive Player of the Year, Brown notched 16 games with 20 or more points and was selected All-ACC First Team for the second straight year. She notched espnW All-America and was named to the John R. Wooden Award final ballot, Naismith Player of the Year candidate, Wade Watch candidate, Senior CLASS Award finalist, Nancy Lieberman Award finalist and a top 15 finalist for the Dawn Staley Award among others.
Brown closed her collegiate career with 2,088 points, 587 assists, 345 steals, 262 three-pointers made and 455 rebounds.
In just two years at Duke, Brown made her mark in the career record books ranking 22nd in scoring (1,263), ninth in three-point field goals made (142), 10th in three-point field goals attempted (369), second in free throw percentage (87.5), 19th in assists (277), tied fourth in assist average (4.1), ninth in steals (218) and first in steals average (3.3).
She turned in two of the top single-season points ledgers in school history as a senior (641, 5th) and junior (622, 7th). Brown's 73 three-pointers as a junior ranked tied fourth and her 69 treys as a senior was eighth for the Blue Devils. Her 19.4 scoring average as a senior was the highest since Alana Beard averaged 19.7 a game in 2003-04.
On the first team included, A'ja Wilson (South Carolina), Katie Lou Samuelson (UConn), Sabrina Ionescu (Oregon), Asia Durr (Louisville) and Victoria Vivians (Miss. State). Headlining the second team were Kalani Brown (Baylor), Kelsey Mitchell (Ohio State), Gabby Williams (UConn), Megan Gustafson (Iowa) and Arike Ogunbowale (Notre Dame).
