WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The No. 3 Duke women's tennis team is scheduled to face No. 11 Texas Tech in the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Team Championship Saturday at 10:00 a.m., at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex.
The Blue Devils reached the quarterfinal round for the first time since 2014 by defeating No. 13 Northwestern 4-0, in the round of 16 on Thursday morning. Texas Tech advanced to the quarterfinal round after defeating No. 6 Texas 4-1.
Tickets for Saturday's competition are available for purchase here. Single session tickets for adults are on sale for $10, while youth and student tickets are $6.
The winner of Saturday's contest between Duke and Texas Tech will face either seventh-seeded Georgia or 15th-seeded Stanford Monday, May 21st at 12:00 p.m.
“We are just looking at it as an opportunity,” said head coach Jamie Ashworth. “There's no real nerves and we didn't play with any nerves against Northwestern. Our players have so much that they still want to accomplish and are playing hungry and acting hungry. It's exciting to see. Everyone is loose, we had a good practice today. We will be ready to play tomorrow.”
Texas Tech Series History
Saturday will be just the second all-time meeting between Duke and Texas Tech. The first came in 2013 when the Blue Devils knocked off the Red Raiders 4-3 in the NCAA second round. That match took place in McLeod Tennis Center on the campus of Texas Tech. Duke has an all-time record of 26-14 against the Big 12 and is 32-16 against teams from the state of Texas.
“It's a great opportunity to play someone we don't play often,” Ashworth said. “They're a team that is senior loaded and has lot of experience and won big matches. It will be a great challenge for us and our program. They're coming off an emotional win over an archrival in Texas. We need to come out and make sure that from the first ball we hit, we're ready to go. They're playing free and with nothing to lose, so we need embrace what's in front of us and be ready. They'll be as prepared as anyone. I have lot of respect for what the coaches have built there. It was a program that wasn't on the map ten years ago and now are routinely in the top 10 or 15 in the country. They play with a lot of pride and passion.”
Scouting Texas Tech
The Red Raiders have a 23-6 record this season and have won 13 of their last 15 matches. The only two losses in that span came to Texas, who the Red Raiders upset in the round of 16. Gabriela Talaba is the top singles player for Texas Tech, ranked No. 21 and owning a 14-6 record on court one. Also ranked in the ITA singles poll is Felicity Maltby (No. 58), Sabrina Federici (No. 106) and Katelyn Jackson (No. 120). Sarah Dvorak and Federici are the No. 28 ranked doubles tandem and have a 10-7 record at position No. 1. Maltby and Talaba have gone 20-3 on court two. Overall, the Red Raiders are 4-2 on neutral courts and 5-6 against nationally ranked opponents.
Duke in the NCAA Quarterfinals
Duke is in the quarterfinals for first time since 2014 and for the 19th time in program history. The Blue Devils are 8-10 all-time in the quarterfinals, the last win coming in 2012 when the Blue Devils topped Georgia 4-2. Duke reached the round nine straight times between 1991 and 1999 and four straight years from 2009 to 2012.
“We've done a really good job of not looking ahead to anything,” said Ashworth. “We're controlling what we can control and the only thing we can control is how we come out and play tomorrow. You've got to take it one match at a time. You have to live for today and do everything to get through today because it doesn't do anything to save something for the next day. No one has lucked their way here, so we have to be prepared for a great, tough match.”
Overall, Duke is 65-28 (.699) in 30 total NCAA Team Tournament appearances. Under Ashworth, the Blue Devils have reached the NCAA's premier event in all 21 seasons and have a 56-20 (.737) record. Ashworth has guided his teams to five semifinals and two finals.
Doubles Dominance
Duke has used only three doubles tandems during the entirety of the dual match season and all three are closing in on milestones. Kaitlyn McCarthy and Ellyse Hamlin are 29-7 this season and have won seven straight matches, five of which were against ranked opponents. With another win, the pair will become the first Blue Devil tandem with 30 wins in a season since Katie Granson and Julia Smith in 2002-2003 and the fifth to ever do so. Kelly Chen and Samantha Harris are 25-7 this season, tying them for the ninth highest single season total by a Duke duo. Chen's 26 doubles wins are tied for tenth among Duke freshmen. Finally, Meible Chi and Hannah Zhao have racked up a 19-6 record this season. With one more win by Chi and Zhao, Duke would have three doubles pairs earn 20 wins in a single season for the first time since 2009.
Win Streaks
Chen and Hamlin both have double digit winning streaks active. Chen has currently won 19-straight matches, the second-longest streak by a Duke freshman. Her 37-7 record leads Duke and is the fourth-highest win total by a Duke rookie. Hamlin has won her last 11 matches and is now 32-5 on the season, including 19-1 on court five. The junior from Fairfield, Conn., is the third Blue Devil to break the 30-win barrier, joining Chen and Chi (34-6). It is the first time Duke has had a trio of 30-match winners since the 2013-14 season. Hamlin becomes the 41st Blue Devil to reach 30-wins in a season and it is the 64th time that a Duke player has done so.
