STILLWATER, Okla. – Boosted by a one-under-par, 71, and even-par, 72, by senior Leona Maguire and freshman Jaravee Boonchant, respectively, the fourth-ranked Duke women's golf team turned in a five-over, 293, Sunday in the third round of the NCAA Championship. The Blue Devils moved up two slots to No. 6 and advanced to Monday's final round of stroke play at the 6,328-yard, par 72 Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Okla.
The top 15 teams advanced to the stroke play final Monday led by Alabama (862), who leads by eight strokes over UCLA (870). Arizona (880), Northwestern (882), Southern California (885), Duke (889), Stanford (890), Kent State (891), Florida State (894), Baylor (895), Arkansas (897), Furman (899), Texas (900), Washington (902) and Louisville (903) rounded out the top 15 teams that moved on.
“I am glad we are in sixth,” said Duke head coach Dan Brooks. “It puts us in that 11:50 a.m., slot off the front. I like playing this course 1-18 as opposed to starting on the back. I am pretty happy with it.”
Fans will be able to follow Monday's final round of stroke play live on Golf Channel from 4-8 p.m. (ET).
“The team has been really in control of their emotions during this tournament,” commented Brooks. “In doing that, you just learn a little bit as you go along. We are not having to convince them to be patient the next day. They have been patient throughout the whole thing. It is a hard golf course and you always learn as you go when playing a course like this.”
Duke kicked off action Sunday morning on hole No. 1 and after the first nine holes the Blue Devils were three-over-par. Both Boonchant and Maguire were even with nine pars each. Over the first two days, Duke struggled on the way in shooting eight-over-par, but on Sunday the Blue Devils were solid finishing two-over.
“I think we have played, probably not our best golf, we have played decent golf,” commented Maguire. “I think we still have a lot more in us. So if we can have our best day tomorrow – I think we need to hole a few more putts. I think people have really struggled on the greens a little bit, especially with pace putting. We are going to work on that some this afternoon and maybe we can go a few shots lower tomorrow.”
Maguire, a native of Cavan, Ireland turned in a solid one-under, 71, Sunday to move into a tie for 17th overall. It marked her 24th even or under par round of the season, which matches the Duke single-season record held by Amanda Blumenherst and Maguire.
“The course played a lot longer today,” said Maguire. “It was a lot cooler so the ball wasn't flying as far and the ground was wet. Hit a few woods into holes we were hitting a mid-iron into yesterday. It definitely played different, especially on the front side when it was raining.”
The two-time National Player of the Year, Maguire hit all 18 greens, all 14 fairways and featured a bogey-free round. It marked the first time since her freshman season she has hit all 18 greens in a round. After making par in each of her first nine holes, Maguire stuck her approach to 10 feet on the 362-yard, par four 10th and drained the birdie. She added eight more pars to close her afternoon.
“It was kind of boring I suppose,” said Maguire. “I hit 18 greens and 14 fairways. I struggled a lot with my irons yesterday and found a key yesterday afternoon. Played a lot better [today]. Just played really solidly on a tough golf course. Stayed out of trouble all day. I would have liked to holed a few more putts, but big improvement from yesterday.”
A product of Bangkok, Thailand, Boonchant posted 11 straight pars to open her round, before sticking her approach on No. 12 to two feet and sinking a birdie to get to one-under. She added four consecutive pars and then suffered her only bogey of the day on the challenging par four 17th. Boonchant closed with a par on No. 18 and is now 16th overall. She hit 13 greens, 13 fairways and had 32 putts Sunday.
Sophomore Ana Belac collected another solid round with a two-over, 74, and is tied 42nd overall. Belac, who is from Portoroz, Slovenia, connected on Duke's first birdie of the morning as she sank a 10-footer on the 349-yard, par four fourth. She then suffered bogeys on No. 5 and No. 8 to make the turn one-over, 37. Belac added her second birdie on No. 10 from 10 feet to get back to even, but had another bogey on No. 11. She returned to even with her third birdie of the day on No. 14, before closing with two bogeys and two pars. Belac hit 13 fairways, 13 greens and had 32 putts Sunday.
“Today definitely the course was playing much different than the previous two or three rounds,” said Belac. “The course was wet; the wind was coming from different directions. Basically on every hole it was a completely different hole to play. So it took a lot of concentration, just like figuring out what to do hole-by-hole.”
Virginia Elena Carta, a junior from Udine, Italy, three-putted her first hole to start her day and then added another bogey on No. 3. She posted another three-putt bogey on the eighth, before sticking her approach on the par five ninth to two feet and sinking her first of two birdies of the day. Carta added bogeys on No. 12-14 to fall to five-over. She registered Duke's only birdie of the first three days on the 390-yard, par four 17th as she rolled in an eight-footer. Carta hit 14 greens, 13 fairways and had 36 putts on the day.
After turning in a three-over, 39, on the front nine, senior Lisa Maguire struggled on the back finishing with an 83.
Following Monday's final round of stroke play, the top eight teams will advance to match play. In the three years since the championship has moved to match play to determine the winner, Duke has advanced in 2015 and 2016.
“The wind switched, it was from the north today,” said Brooks. “I don't think it played a lot harder, but since it was wet, it did play longer.”
Duke will tee off Monday beginning at 11:50 a.m., along with Northwestern and Southern California.
