STILLWATER, Okla. – For the third time out of the last four years, the Duke women's golf team has advanced to the match play portion of the NCAA Championship as the Blue Devils finished 72 holes of stroke play in sixth overall with a four-day total of 1,182 at the 6,328-yard, par 72 Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Okla.
Duke will tee off beginning at 8:00 a.m. (ET), Tuesday, May 22 in the quarterfinals against Southern California, who was seeded No. 3. The Blue Devils and Trojans were the exact same seeds in 2016 when Duke upset Southern California, 4-1 in match play in Eugene, Ore. Fans can follow the action live on the Golf Channel from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
It marks the 16th time in school history the Blue Devils have finished in the top 16 of the NCAA Championship.
The top eight teams that advanced to match play were UCLA (1161), Alabama (1161), Southern California (1168), Northwestern (1173), Stanford (1180), Duke (1182), Kent State (1184) and Arizona (1185). Arizona defeated Baylor in a playoff to garner the No. 1 slot.
In match play, No. 1 seed UCLA will face No. 8 seed Arizona; No. 2 seed Alabama will take on No. 7 seed Kent State; No. 3 seed Southern California vs. No. 6 seed Duke and No. 4 seed Northwestern against No. 5 Stanford.
Senior Leona Maguire turned in a team-best one-over-par, 289 for the tournament placing tied 13th overall. It marked her third top 15 finish in NCAA Championship action, after closing with a two-under, 70, in the final round.
A native of Cavan, Ireland, Maguire opened her day with eight pars and a birdie on No. 4. She made the turn at one-under, 35, and moved her score to four-under with birdies on No. 10, No. 12 and No. 14. Maguire made a great par save on the par three 15th and then parred No. 16. After totaling 36 bogey-free holes in a row, Maguire three-putted both No. 17 and No. 18 to finish with a 70. She hit 17 greens, all 14 fairways and rolled 33 putts in the final round.
Maguire finished her Duke career with 87 career rounds of even or under par, which is a Duke record and the second-most in NCAA history.
Sophomore Ana Belac turned in a team-best five birdies on Monday and signed for a two-under, 70. She placed tied 27th overall with a four-day ledger of 223. Belac, who is from Portoroz, Slovenia, opened her round with a par and then went birdie, birdie and bogey over the next three holes to remain even par. She then struck fire with birdies on No. 9, No. 12 and No. 15 to move to three-under for the day. Belac hit her drive out of bounds on No. 16, but came back to drain a 20-foot putt to save bogey. She got up-and-down on No. 17 for par from 10 feet and then parred No. 18 to finish at two-under.
The two-under, 70, for Belac was a career-best in NCAA Championship action.
Coming off collecting back-to-back rounds of 72 the last two days, freshman Jaravee Boonchant had an even par round through 15 as she totaled 13 pars, one three-foot birdie on No. 6 and a three-putt bogey on No. 10. On the way in, she suffered a double-bogey on No. 16 and bogey on No. 17 to finish with a 75. For the week, she placed tied 27th overall with a five-over, 293.
Junior Virginia Elena Carta struggled with an 80 Monday and placed tied 69th, while Lisa Maguire carded a 78 and was tied 79th.
Duke last played in match play in 2015 and 2016, advancing to the semifinals both years.
