DURHAM, N.C. – The draws for the 2018 NCAA Singles and Doubles Men's Tennis Championships were released Tuesday with redshirt junior Nicolas Alvarez set to compete in the first round of singles play at 8 a.m. on Wednesday at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Alvarez, who is ranked No. 19 in the latest Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings, received an at-large bid to compete in the 64-player field for the third time in his career. He is the eighth Blue Devil in program history to be selected to three or more NCAA Singles Tournaments.
Duke has had at least one player chosen to compete in the NCAA Singles Championships in 10 of the last 11 seasons.
Alvarez, Duke's No. 1 singles player, will begin the singles championship against Texas A&M's [9-16 seed] Arthur Rinderknech. Alvarez owns a 15-8 overall record with an 8-5 mark against nationally-ranked opponents this season. Included in his 15 wins is an upset of the nation's No. 1 player with a 6-3, 6-4 victory against North Carolina's William Blumberg on March 9. In his last outing, Alvarez picked up a 6-3, 6-4 victory against No. 45 Gustav Hansson of Mississippi in the opening round of the NCAA Team Championship.
Earlier this spring, Alvarez was named to the All-ACC First Team for the third time his career. The Lima, Peru, product has been ranked in the top 55 for the entire dual match season and was as high as No. 11 in April.
