DURHAM, N.C.—Duke University men's soccer head coach John Kerr has announced the 2018 soccer schedule that features 11 home contests and eight contests against NCAA Tournament teams. The Blue Devils will hit the road for six games, two of which are non-conference matches.
Big Tests in Exhibition Matches
The Blue Devils will play three exhibition matches in a one-week span. Duke will host ACC foes Clemson Aug. 11 and NC State Aug. 18. Duke will travel to South Carolina Aug. 15. The exhibitions will be the final warm-up to the 2018 campaign after the team has had a week of preseason camp under its belt.
John Rennie Nike Invitational
Duke hosts the annual John Rennie Nike Invitational the final weekend in August. The Blue Devils host Vermont and FIU in the tournament with Elon rounding out the group. The matchup with the Catamounts of Vermont will be the first since 1982, while the Blue Devils and Panthers kick off for the fourth time and for the second consecutive season. Duke defeated FIU twice in 2017, including the second round NCAA Tournament win.
Road Trip to Sunny San Diego
Five days after playing the John Rennie Nike Invitational, Duke will make the 2,500-mile trek to San Diego to take on the Toreros. The Blue Devils are returning the trip after San Diego traveled to Durham for the 2016 John Rennie Nike Invitational. Duke and the Toreros tied 1-1 in 2016 and San Diego is coming off of an 8-6-3 campaign.
Blue Devils Open ACC Play with Pair of Tough Contests
Duke kicks off its ACC slate with tests against Louisville and UNC. The Blue Devils travel to Louisville Sept. 9 in search of their first ACC victory over the Cardinals. Five days later, Duke has the pleasure of hosting 2017 NCAA semifinalist North Carolina at Koskinen Stadium. The rivalry game kicks off at the unusual time of 5 p.m., with Duke aiming to repeat the 2014 victory.
Tuesday Tilts to Watch For
The first midweek match for the Blue Devils is one to watch for as Georgetown makes the trip to Durham Sept. 18. Duke bested the Hoyas in Washington DC last season in a thriller as the two teams faced each other for the first time since 1994. In addition to Georgetown, Duke will host George Washington Sept. 25 and a tough Wofford program Oct. Overall, Duke will play six midweek games, five of which will be at home. Duke concludes its Tuesday night slate Oct. 23 at Elon. The Blue Devils are riding a three-game win streak against the Phoenix.
Boston College, Notre Dame, Pittsburgh Round Out ACC Home Schedule
The brutal stretch of three likely top 25 games in seven days concludes with Boston College. Duke hosts the Eagles Sept. 21 after not seeing each other last season. The Blue Devils are 2-2 in the previous four games after suffering four straight setbacks to Boston College from 2010-2012.
Notre Dame, under new leadership in head coach Chad Riley, visits Koskinen Stadium. The Fighting Irish have had the better results in the series, going 6-1-1 since joining the league in 2012. Duke's last win over Notre Dame was in Durham in 2016, a 2-1 double overtime thriller.
Pittsburgh completes Duke's home ACC slate Oct. 19. The Blue Devils are 4-0-1 against the Panthers as an ACC foes and look to continue the trend as the 2018 regular season winds down.
Wake Forest, Virginia and Virginia Tech Among 4 ACC Road Games
After kicking off the ACC season on the road at Louisville, Duke also will travel to perennial powers Wake Forest and Virginia and complete the regular season at Virginia Tech.
The reigning ACC Champion Demon Deacons host Duke Sept. 29. The Blue Devils lead the series 23-15-6, but haven't beaten Wake Forest since 2011. The following Friday, the Blue Devils and Cavaliers square off for the 89th time. Duke owns the most recent victory, a 1-0 triumph, its first since 2009.
The regular season comes to a close in Blacksburg against the Hokies. Duke is 12-3-4 all-time against Virginia Tech, including last year's 3-1 victory. The Blue Devils are 5-2-1 in Blacksburg and 3-1 under head coach John Kerr.
