DURHAM, N.C. – Duke redshirt junior quarterback Daniel Jones has been selected to the preseason watch list for the Manning Award, sponsored by the Allstate Sugar Bowl. The annual honor is presented to the top quarterback in country following bowl season.
Last month Jones was named to the watch list for the Maxwell Award, presented to the college player of the year by the Maxwell Football Club, and the Davey O'Brien Award, given annually to the nation's top quarterback by the Davey O'Brien Foundation. Jones, who was named to the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award Watch List on Tuesday, has also earned a spot on Phil Steele's College Football Preview's preseason All-ACC third team.
During the 2017 season Jones completed 257-of-453 (.567) passes for 2,691 yards with 14 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. He also rushed 161 times for 518 yards (3.22) and seven scores. He was one of six quarterbacks among Power 5 schools to amass 2,500 or more passing yards and 500 or more rushing yards, joining Ohio State's J.T. Barrett, Clemson's Kelly Bryant, Louisville's Lamar Jackson, Michigan State's Brian Lewerke and Wake Forest's John Wolford.
Jones, a 6-5, 220-pound native of Charlotte, N.C., enters the 2018 season ranking third among active players in the ACC in passing yards, third in total offensive yards (6,531), third in passing touchdowns, tied for third in touchdowns scored by a quarterback, tied for third in rushing touchdowns by a quarterback, fourth in total offensive yards per game (261.24), fifth in passing yards per game (221.08), sixth in passing yards, sixth in rushing attempts, tied for sixth in rushing touchdowns, tied for seventh in overall touchdowns and 14th in rushing yards.
“We're very excited to jump into another college football season and to have the opportunity to watch all of the tremendous quarterbacks around the country,” Archie Manning said. “While these 30 quarterbacks have been selected to our Watch List, every quarterback in the nation remains eligible to earn the honor. We will make some midseason additions which will allow us to recognize some new faces as well as some of the standout quarterbacks that are still in the midst of preseason competition.”
Inclusion on the Watch List is not necessary for the quarterbacks to be selected for the honor. Midseason additions to the Watch List will be announced on Thursday, October 11. The list of 10 finalists will be released on Thursday, November 29. The winner will be announced in the week following the College Football Playoff National Championship.
