Proch Scores Twice; Duke Rides Fast Start to Win

SAN DIEGO –Junior Daniele Proch scored twice and second-ranked Duke used a fast start to come away with a 4-1 road victory at San Diego. The Blue Devils remain unbeaten at 3-0 on the year.
Duke improves to 3-0 on the year, while San Diego dropped to 0-2-1. The Blue Devils are averaging an impressive 3.33 goals per game this season and have scored at least three goals in each of the three outings.
The Blue Devils got off to a fast start with a pair of goals in the opening six minutes. Proch put Duke up 1-0 in the fourth minute when he took a half chance from distance and beat the San Diego goalkeeper on the left post. The junior striker, unmarked, saw the opening and made the heads-up play and drove a low shot inside the left post for his fourth goal of the season.
Minutes later, junior midfielder Max Moser got into the scoring mix with an unassisted tally from the right flank. The goal was Moser's second of his career and gave Duke a 2-0 lead. Proch, in the 23rd minute, struck again as he headed in a cross from the foot of Issa Rayyan.
Attacking down the left side, Rayyan served up a ball to the far post where Proch was wide open to head in the service for his fifth goal of the year. The tally matches Proch's total in all 20 games last season.
Duke held a narrow 5-4 advantage in shots in the first 45 minutes, scoring three goals on the five shots.
The Blue Devils started the second period much the way they started the game as graduate student transfer Kevin Feucht netted his second of the year for a 4-0 Duke lead. With the ball bouncing around the penalty box and the Toreros unable to clear from danger, Feucht took advantage and finished.
Just 39 seconds later San Diego ruined Duke's shutout as Aidan Marmion struck from distance to make it 4-1.
The final 20 minutes resulted in no more goals and the Blue Devils grabbed win No. 3. In goal, Will Pulisic made three saves to earn the win. San Diego goalkeeper Connor Hountalas had four stops. Overall, Duke held a 13-9 advantage in shots, including an 8-4 edge in shots on goal.
Duke opens ACC play next, traveling to play No. 9 Louisville Sept. 9. Kickoff is slated for 2 p.m., on ACC Network Extra.
