CLEMSON, S.C. – The Duke volleyball team dropped a five-set decision to Clemson 3-2 (15-25, 27-25, 25-23, 30-32, 4-15) Friday evening at Jervey Gym in Clemson, S.C.
With the loss, Duke drops to 8-12 and are 1-6 in conference play.
Sophomore
Ade Owokoniran paced the Blue Devils with 24 kills and just six errors to hit .360 percent and added two digs and four blocks. The 24 kills mark the third 20+ kill performance for the sophomore. Rookie
Gracie Johnson added 14 kills while setter
Sarah Nelson dished 35 assists. Libero
Mackenzie Cole registered her first 20+ dig performance this season with 22.
For the Tigers, Kaylin Korte led the offense with 30 kills on just seven errors to hit .418 percent.
Sophomore
Lily Cooper picked up her second block of the match early within the first few points and would ultimately end the match with seven. The Tigers had 16 kills and just four errors to hit .375 percent in the opening frame as the Blue Devils tallied just eight kills and hit .051 to give Clemson the early 1-0 match lead.
In the second set, Duke led 17-14 before a 4-0 Clemson run to force Duke to call a timeout. Owokoniran put down her sixth kill to tie it up at 21 before a Clemson ace to even it once again at 23. Johnson got it done on both sides of the ball late in the second with her eighth kill, her second block and an ace to even the match at 1-1.
Both teams had solid hitting outings in the second with Duke at .371 and Clemson at .333 percent.
Clemson edged ahead 20-19 before Duke capitalized with a 3-0 run of their own from a couple Tiger hitting errors. The Blue Devils knocked down 18 kills in the third set with Owokoniran (4) and Johnson (5) leading the way and gave Duke a 2-1 lead heading into the fourth.
Clemson's Korte tallied her 25th kill to make it 19 all in the fourth set before a block on Owokoniran's kill attempt to give them a slight 20-19 edge. Both teams traded kills in the final few points before Clemson tallied its third ace of the game to send it to a deciding fifth set.
The Tigers jumped out to an early 7-1 lead and were able to hold off Duke to take the match.
Duke will travel to Atlanta, Ga., to take on Georgia Tech for a 2:30 p.m., Sunday matchup on RSN.
