DURHAM, N.C. – Two trios of Blue Devils led Duke to a 10-0 win over Charlotte in a 10-inning fall exhibition game Saturday afternoon at Duke Softball Stadium.
"We have improved in all facets of our game," Duke head coach
Marissa Young said of Duke's fall season. "Pitching has improved and with our hitting, we are seeing a lot more power in the amount of hits we are getting per game. Our run production is up and we are playing really good defense. We are seeing improvement all the way across the board."
In the circle,
Peyton St. George,
Shelby Walters and
Angie Biele combined to blank the 49ers and allow just three hits through the ten innings. Walters started for the Blue Devils and threw four innings giving up one hit and recording five strikeouts. St. George came in to start the fifth and matched Walters line on the day, striking out five of her own. Biele closed things out with two scoreless frames.
Offensively, the top three of Duke's lineup,
Rachel Abboud,
Kyla Morris and
Gisele Tapia, led the Blue Devils going a combined 9-for-13 with nine RBI and five runs. Batting leadoff, Abboud went 3-for-3, scored three runs, batted in four more and had two walks. Morris hit second going 5-for-5 with two runs and two RBI. Tapia rounded out the trio batting third and finishing 3-for-5 with three RBI.
Duke took control of the game early by snatching a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the opening inning. Morris knocked an RBI double to left field to score Abboud from first. Tapia then singled during the next at bat to score Morris. The Blue Devils would never look back.
The hosts poured it on late as they scored four in the seventh, one in the eighth and three in the ninth to secure the win.
Raine Wilson recorded the day's only home run, a solo shot as the leadoff batter in the bottom of the eighth inning. She finished the contest 2-for-5.
Duke is back in action Sunday when it travels to UNC Greensboro to continue its fall season. The game will start at 2 p.m.
