Sunday Rewind: A Look Back at the UNC Game

DURHAM, N.C. – Duke football suffered a gut-wrenching, 20-17, loss to rival North Carolina on Saturday in an ACC Coastal Division contest.
Despite the outcome, there were some positives that came out of the game. Let's take a quick rewind to see how everything unfolded.
The Duke-UNC rivalry is one of the best in college athletes. Prior to the game, a few former Blue Devils gave the current Duke team some words of encouragement.
Junior safety Marquis Waters got things going early for the Blue Devils when he registered his second interception of the season in the opening period. That pick was the Delray Beach, Fla., native's fourth career takeaway.
A few plays later redshirt junior AJ Reed converted on his ninth-straight field goal to hand Duke an early 3-0 lead. The 23-yarder kept the Prattville, Ala., native perfect through the uprights this season.
After UNC had responded with 14 consecutive points, the Blue Devils saw redshirt senior quarterback Quentin Harris team up with fellow classmate Scott Bracey for an 11-yard touchdown to pull them within 14-10. That score was Bracey's second of the season and Harris' 13th passing strike.
The Duke defense got a huge stop when Victor Dimukeje and Jalen Alexander joined forces to pick off UNC quarterback Sam Howell at the Tar Heel 29-yard line for the Blue Devils' second interception of the game. Dimukeje got a hand on Howell's throw before Alexander jumped up and corralled the loose ball returning it 22 yards to the UNC seven. One play later Harris scampered into the end zone for his team-leading sixth rushing score.
A late third-quarter field goal by the home side set up an exciting fourth quarter in which the game was tied at 17-all. The Tar Heels converted on another field goal with seven minutes remaining in the contest to jump in front 20-17. Carolina nearly made it a 10-point advantage, but Tre Hornbuckle punched the ball out of Javonte Williams' hands at the Duke two-yard line to create chaos near the end zone. Shaka Heyward fell on the loose football giving life back to the Blue Devils with a little under three minutes to play.
Duke was able to move the ball 92 yards down the field to the UNC two-yard line with 18 second remaining. Unfortunately, the Tar Heels pick off Deon Jackson in the end zone after the Blue Devils tried to use a trick play to seal the win.
Duke goes into its second open week of the season before welcoming No. 8 ranked Notre Dame on Saturday, Nov. 9. Game time has still yet to be determined.
