DURHAM, N.C. – In a decisive game three, the Black Team cruised to a 9-0 victory in the final game of Duke baseball's Fall World Series Saturday morning at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
The Black Team used an impressive offensive showing combined with standout pitching performances from the trio of freshman
Henry Williams, senior
Matt Mervis and junior
Thomas Girard to propel to the shutout victory. Williams worked four innings of shutout baseball in the start, before turning it over to Mervis for two frames and Girard for the final inning.
The Black Team struck first in Saturday's contest, plating a run in the very first frame. Junior
Joey Loperfido led off the bottom of the first with a single through the left side of the infield before moving into scoring position on a stolen base. After Loperfido advanced to third on a groundout in the next at-bat, Mervis sent a sacrifice fly to center field to score the game's first run and give Black a 1-0 lead after one inning of action.
The Black Team added it to its lead in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, tallying eight runs across the span. Junior
Michael Rothenberg reached on a single before freshman
Graham Pauley walked and redshirt sophomore
Wil Hoyle reached on a strikeout wild pitch to load the bases. With nowhere to put them, a fielder error by the Blue Team allowed one run to cross.
A hit-by-pitch in the next at-bat followed by a bases-loaded walk resulted in two more runs in the frame, extending Black's lead to 4-0 after four innings.
The Black squad returned to the dish to increase its lead with another run in the fifth as Mervis delivered a solo shot to right field to make it a 5-0 ballgame through five full.
The Black Team exploded for four runs in the sixth to make it a 9-0 contest and put the game out of reach. With runners on second and third, Loperfido worked a full count before lining a single to center field to plate a pair. Redshirt junior
Chris Dutra followed up with a single to place runners on first and second, before Mervis collected his second hit of the day with a RBI double to right field to score two more and set the score at 9-0, the eventual final.
Saturday's contest marks the end of the fall slate for the Duke baseball squad, as the team now heads into its offeseason workout program. The Blue Devils will open the 2020 spring season, Feb. 14-16, as Duke welcomes Army West-Point to Durham Bulls Athletic Park for opening weekend.
